Why does my hair pull red when I darken it using an Ash color?

I am naturally a level 7 or 8, and very cool toned. I have my hairstylist color my hair with highlights and lowlights and the lowlights always look slightly red even when using an Ash color. Also my hair doesnt darken as most would think so do get my lowlights at what should be a level 7 we use a 5 or 6. Even my hairdresser is baffled as to why my hair pulls so much red and doesnt darken as it should.
The hair that pulled red is 100% natural hair, I had not put any color on my hair in at least 8 months and the redness is throughout those natural roots that grew in.

Perhaps you still have residual hair color underneath that once pulled red or orange and since you haven;t gotten rid of it, it's still under there.

You have the options of having your colorist let the low-light be much more ash and sit on there longer (running the risk of it turning grayish or green) BUT.....if they at least freaking try, since your hair pulls red, it might just work. I DARED the 4th stylist who wouldn't listen to me, do this and VOILA - it worked!)

Orrrrrrrrrr - last resort, have her bleach the hair and lift the color, and then start from scratch with whatever shade of ash you want. Much more damaging on your hair - but it will be stripped of all color that was on there before.

Ok, so a few months ago I dyed my hair with 3N permanent color (I used 20 vol. developer) then I absolutely hated it (go figure) and missed my blonde hair so she did a few foils which lightened some of the color, but it wasn't really what I wanted so I started bleaching high lights in (the high lights all ended up being around a 7G). Then today I had an appointment with my stylist to get my hair back to somewhere around a level 8N - she used the Pravana Color extractor which took most of the color out but left my hair tinted kind of orange-y and then she put color over it and I'd say it's probably a level 5N now :/
What can I do to get it back to a level 8 in a week or two (I can't afford to keep going to a stylist).

Are there any deep conditioners you can recommend that don't need a dryer (I don't have one)?
I currently use a deep conditioner from K-Pak by Joico and also ER Fusion by White Sands once a month...
and I switch my regular shampoo's and conditioners from L'Anza Anti Aging and Pureology NanoWorks every couple of weeks
Oh, and do you think that using a clarifying shampoo a couple times a week would help fade the color faster???

You need to use scalp bleach, bring it up to a level 9 which is just past removing any red or gold tone. Then condition preferably under a dryer with a very deep protien conditioner then redeposit an 8N. Only add a little (1oz) of 8A. Only if you have any gold left. Mix these with 20 Vol Developer. Make sure you do several deep conditioning treatments. no more than 2 a week because scalp bleach can be very dry and damaging to the hair.

I have platinum blonde hair (from bleach) and I'm sick of the up keep..... My real hair color is light brown with redish tones in it. What is a good way for me to go darker with a box color? I would be happy with a dirty blonde.... Will it take multiple colorings to get it darker?

you will need to "fill" your hair first. the purpose of a filler, or pre-pigmentation, is to return the missing pigment from the hair prior to doing a tint-back service. if you were to just put darker color on, it would look muddy, and dull without a filler. the filler would have to be a warm shade. this step is necessary in order for your target color to look the best, and for this step, your hair will temporarily be an unflattering color because you need that warmth in there to put back the missing pigment in your hair. this also ensures that the color wonât fade rapidly either. process, rinse, dry, and THEN apply the target color over it. . I would use a demi permanent color in a level 8 warm red/gold color. It's a lot of work, you may want to see a pro.

(Known as a peekaboo) But I'm not sure what hair dye might be the best to make it look bright but natural if you know what I mean. My mom wont let me use Splat or Manic Panic etc.. Playing with chemicals is not like playing with clothes, or doing a manicure, there are penalties for playing chemicals in the lab. Even hair color experts at the salon are not rocket scientists, they do a bang up dye jobs to their clients or their own hair.

Professionals - how do I keep my hair color without frying my hair?

I color my own hair strawberry blonde (a level 7/8, and I am a level 6 or so). I am coloring more often than I'd like in order to hide grays and because the red fades out so fast, usually in 3 -4 weeks. I would like to try adding a semi-permanent reddish color as a boost, but am afraid the double process over my whole head will cause breakage and fry my hair. It's already not in great shape, but my ends just look like a bad bleach job at this point - no red whatsoever (my hair is long). Will ammonia-free hair color still damage my hair? Suggestions? Help!

try using pantine prov blonde expressions. it will help keep your color. and if you get spil ends easily, go to the salon evey few weeks and get them cut off

Can I remove permanent hair color from my hair?

I've been dying my hair for a few years now, mainly back and forth between browns and reds. I was a blonde at one point and thus bleached my hair. Right now I am a red head and though I absolutely love being a red head, coloring hair requires a lot of work that I'm getting rather fed up with.

Is there a way to go back to my natural color? I know red is the hardest color to remove from hair, I don't a packet of color corrector from Sally's would do the job.

What do I do? How much will it cost?
My hair color right now (dyed) is a level 7 or 8 copper red. My natural hair color is a level 5 or 6 brown. How would the salon be able to get it back to that?

Hi,
I think you are in luck. That is if you are correct in your assessments of your present level of hair color and your natural hair color. You do not have to remove your present level 7 or 8 copper red.

The reason for this is because your natural hair color is darker by one or two levels.
However it still is a bit tricky. Use level 6, which would be dark blonde. Use a permanent hair color but in dark ash blonde. Add a blue accent color.

Actually when mixing the color you should first mix the accent color, if you are using a creme hair color, squeeze out about 6 inches out of the tube. (Most hair color manufacturers have accent colors). Use 10 volume peroxide. (Use the correct ratio of mixing peroxide-developer and permanent hair color. They are not all mixed in the same ratio. Some are companies have it at 1:1 and some 1:2) .Anyway, take a little of the 10 volume developer and blend it with the accent color. Now you can add the dark ash blonde and the rest of the 10 volume peroxide.

Apply the permanent hair color evenly with a tint brush over the entire hair, section by section. Then let it process the required time. Manufacturers direction). The tricky part is to use the right amount of accent color. If you use too little your hair will still be a bit red. The purpose of the accent color is to neutralize the copper tone. And blue will neutralize the copper tone if you use the right amount. If you want to be really sure you could make a test strand. But make sure to dry it before judging the color. Take a little bunch of hair on the side of your head.

You can see that using this technique is much easier than having to remove the color. When you remove the color you are still not left with the right hair color. You will have to deal with getting rid of yellow and unevenness of color.

I recommend doing highlights with ash as it can look green without some variation. You will also need to bleach your hair and tone it all over first to get the brown and red out of your hair, and to try and get it the same colour/tone all over. I would dye it ash all over, see how it looks, and consider highlights as a separate process a few weeks later if you find the ash blonde looks a little lifeless.

1) Sort out a bleach and developer first. The brand Kaleidoscope has bleaches with toners built right in so you can tone your hair to a neutral colour before you start messing with ash (use a blue toner to get rid of red). You may need to bleach and tone separately, but I heard good things about Kaleidoscope when I was working at Sallys. As for developer, it sounds like a 20 or 30 will get you to the level you want, but check with the associates or the packaging on the bleach to be sure (without seeing your hair I can't tell).

2) Pick your colour and developer. I would use Ion as they tend to have better control over the undertones in their ash products (using Wella, for example, is basically like dyeing your hair green). Any brand of developer will do and Ion has a little chart attached to the display that will help you figure out whether you need a 20, 30 or 40 volume.* The sensitive scalp stuff (purple bottle) is quite nice especially as bleaching can be irritating enough.

3) Get a protein treatment. Bleach kills your hair and you'll want to rebuild it unless you want to look like your hair has been fried. Ion Effective Care Treatment is like magic for your hair. Use it right after you bleach and again after you've dyed it and then continue to use it twice a week for a month or two. After that, scale it back to once a week.

* You want to make this decision based on how light you think your hair will be after you bleach it. Example; if you want to go from a level 4 to 6 you will probably need a 20, but a 4 to an 8 might require a 30. If you bleach your hair and it comes out a level 6-8 you will probably only want a 20-volume developer.

If you can find an associate who is has their hairdressing license, double check all of this information with them as the current colour of your hair and your desired level of lightening are hard for me to judge without seeing you.

You should dye your hair based on your skin tone and eye color which will determine whether you should go with warm tones or ash tones. The depth of your eye color will determine the depth of your hair color. Your natural hair color will determine how many shades you can go up or down.

Skin and Eye Color:
You know you have a cool skin tone if you have any of these traits-
Skin:
1)Your skin burns easily
2) You have rosy cheeks
3) Your skin is ruddy, pale, freckled, or ebony.
4) Dark brown, olive, medium or pale with pink undertones.
5) You are simply pale with no undertones.
6) Olive complexion (of asian or hispanic descent)
7) Have cool or bluish undertones under your eyes.
8) Pale skin that almost appears translucent.
Eyes:
1) Greys
2) Blues
3) Greyish blue
4) Dark Blue
5) Dark or deep brown
6) Black
7) Hazel with speckles of grey or blue
8) Blackish brown

If you fit the categories above your possible hair colors are:
Light ash blonde, coffee/mid level blonde, aubergine/mahogany or burgundy reds, blue/green dark browns or blacks, blue-blacks, deep coffee brown, medium ash brown, dishwater blonde, sandy or beige blonde, platinum blonde, raven blacks, cool ash browns, clean blue-base reds, fire reds.

How do you lighten your hair from a dark red to a dirty blonde?

Naturally my hair color is a dark blonde light brown color. About 2 months ago I dyed it a dark red. I don't like the color AT ALL and I am wondering how do you go about lightening back to my natural hair color?

I am going to get it done professionally, but I just wanted to know the steps that would be taken. I've heard of just doing a whole bunch of highlights until your hair just grows out, but I would really like to just have my solid natural hair color back.

adding highlights will get your hair lighter but you will still have that red color in there. This is by no means an easy job and I am very glad you're not going to try it at home. The only way it can be done is by using a good color remover.. it may have to be applied 2 times. This will leave your hair a really ugly color and very blotchy, but you probably wont see that as the colorist will usually apply the new color right over the top of that. your hair will need a nice level 7 or 8 ashy tone to correct the red and lightned hair.

I tell my hairdresser I want my hair a bright red and she's already at level 7 or 8 and my hair looks red but not the bright red I want. I mean by week 4 my hair looks more redish brown.
I have been using color safe shampoo and conditioner. I also don't wash my hair every day.
I also feel odd going in every time telling her I want it brighter. How do I express this without seeming rude.

you need to use a colour safe shampoo and conditioner.. use one that is made for red hair. she might not be using the right colour for you. or she could mix a few colours together to get you to the right colour. its all experimentation and using the right care products
