I don't think it will ruin the show for you. In fact, it will probably just make the show seem all the better by comparison, since, in my opinion, the books blow. To be fair, I've only read the first one, but it was so bad that not only did I not even consider buying the second, I actually just gave it away for free. And I love vampire fiction.

The first book was published in 1991, and very much feels like it's an early 90s book. It's super cheesy and cliched.

Book Elena is a pltinum blonde and complete snob. She's your sterotypical cheerleader Queen Bee, mostly concerned with fashion, her social status, making sure she's the most desirable girl at school, etc. She's like the show version of Caroline in early season 1.

Book Katherine, well, don't expect any of the awesomeness you get from her in the show. In book one, she's described as a meek, angelic, weak, extremely ladylike little girl. She's described as looking like Elena, but 5 or so inches shorter and with lighter eyebrows.

Jeremy doesn't exist. Instead, Elena has a 4-year-old little sister who really doesn't do anything for the story.

Bonnie is a dorky white girl with frizzy red hair. She's a psychic descended from Druids who goes into these ultra-cheesy trances and warns Elena about various things.

Caroline is a tanned brunette whose sole obsession is taking Elena's place as the most popular girl in school.

Tyler is a stupid jock and bully. He's just a throwaway meathead.

Stefan is a 500 year old Italian who's described as short. He's really quite pathetic, with no personality whatsoever other than being sorrowful and quiet, with Elena constantly coming on to him and being pissed off that he's not going after her life all the other boys.

Damon rarely appears, but when he does it's with fog and crows. He's not funny or heartfelt at all like he is in the show. He's just dark, mysterious, and mostly not there.

Basically, what you'll get is the story of a vapid blonde cheerleader who falls for a super quiet and weak vampire boy, his creepy brother pops in for a few minutes here and there, her best friend has a spooky vision every now and then, there's some school dances, and...blah. I don't recommend it at all. It's definitely no substitute for the show.

If you want something to curb your cravings while waiting for season 3, I suggest watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, and Charmed in the meantime, and maybe pick up a book series called "Rachel Morgan" by Kim Harrison. It's in the adult genre, but not too heavy on sex or anything. It's about witches, vampires, werewolves, pixies, demons, you name it. The main character is a witch in her 20s who lives with a pixy and a vampire and they run a business catching supernatural criminals together.

Basically, what you'll get is the story of a vapid blonde cheerleader who falls for a super quiet and weak vampire boy, his creepy brother pops in for a few minutes here and there, her best friend has a spooky vision every now and then, there's some school dances, and...blah. I don't recommend it at all. It's definitely no substitute for the show.

If you want something to curb your cravings while waiting for season 3, I suggest watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, and Charmed in the meantime, and maybe pick up a book series called "Rachel Morgan" by Kim Harrison. It's in the adult genre, but not too heavy on sex or anything. It's about witches, vampires, werewolves, pixies, demons, you name it. The main character is a witch in her 20s who lives with a pixy and a vampire and they run a business catching supernatural criminals together.
