You'd think I could remember simple 7th grade genetics...but I don't.

I have green eyes and blonde hair. My mom has blue eyes and blonde hair. My dad has green eyes and red hair.

He has brown eyes and brown hair. His mom has brown eyes and brown hair. His dad has blue eyes and blonde hair.

What are the possible eye/hair color combos for our children?

Never underestimate the power of recessive genes. When they get together, they can really surprise you. Genetics is an amazing study.

I knew a 1/2 black, 1/2 white woman and a redhead man who had 2 children with blue eyes. Apparently the woman had a recessive gene for blue eyes. Normally with this coupling you would expect the brown eye dominance.

And albinism is the result of two recessive genes meeting when both parents have normal melanin, but carry the gene unknowingly. There is a 25% chance of this with each birth.

So you never really know because each person carries a set of dominant genes (what you see) and recessive genes (what you don't see).

Red hair appears in people with two copies of a recessive gene on chromosome 16 which causes a mutation in the MC1R protein. It is associated with fair skin color, lighter eye colors (gray, blue, green, and hazel), freckles, and sensitivity to ultraviolet light.//

The genetics of red hair, discovered in 1997, appear to be associated with the melanocortin-1 receptor (MC1R), which is found on chromosome 16. Red hair is associated with fair skin color due to low concentrations of eumelanin throughout the body of those with red hair. This lower melanin-concentration confers the advantage that a sufficient concentration of important Vitamin D can be produced under low light conditions. However, when UV-radiation is strong (like in regions close to the equator) the lower concentration of melanin leads to several medical disadvantages, such as a higher risk of skin cancer.

The MC1R recessive variant gene that gives people red hair and fair skin is also associated with freckles, though it is not uncommon to see a redhead without freckles. Eighty percent of redheads have an MC1R gene variant,[5] and the prevalence of these alleles is highest in Scotland and Ireland. The alleles that code for red hair occur close to the alleles that affect skin color, so it seems that the phenotypic expression for lighter skin and red hair are interrelated.

Red hair can originate from several different changes on the MC1R-gene. If one of these changes is present on both chromosomes then the respective individual is likely to have red hair. This type of inheritance is described as an autosomal recessive mode of inheritance. Even if both parents do not have red hair themselves, both can be carriers for the gene and have a redheaded child. (Red hair genetics).

I have light brown eyes, and thin lips and a pointy nose and I have a really southernish redneckish accent and a lot of people mainly black make fun of me about this. I have a sandish brown red hair color. An my hair is like a biracial paersons hair. My grandfather was mixed race and my great grandfather was white. Could I have got this features from him? My dad is black and my mom is 1/4 white I don't what other races. Could I have got these traits from grandfather?

I am in a genetics class right now and we are talking about the Dominent and recessive traits. I'm not too good at it myself, so I was hoping someone could help me out. Anyways, My hair and eye color is Brown and blue, where as My Girlfriends is Red and Blue. Could someone tell me of what could our baby's eyes and hair color would be?

There is no way to tell for sure. Hair and eye color are polygenic traits meaning that the phenotypes for these traits are controlled by multiple genes. Brown hair is the most dominant trait for hair in this situation so it is the most likely and red is very recessive, so it is highly unlikely. In terms of eye color, your baby will probably have blue eyes although other colors such as green are possible outcomes.

If you are asking this because you are worried that your girlfriend's baby is not also yours, this is not a valid way of telling because of all the uncertainty that comes with polygenic traits. Blood typing is a better method, although that too can also be uncertain.
