How long does red hair dye last?

Q. I just dyed a small strip (not even a strip,less than that) red and yes I bleached it. I used splat so I'm wondering one when will it fade and two how bad will it look? I mean it's just a small piece I can easily hide but I don't want it to look bad and damaged.. >.o

red hair dye fades the fastest because the molecules that make it are bigger than other colors, so when they come out of the follicle it makes a more immediate impact. Red hair dye will begin to fade within a week and turns kinda orangey. If you want to keep the red you will have to touch it up every 3-4 weeks, but this can damage hair. If you plan on doing this then you need to do a few things to help it stay healthy looking. Use conditioner and leave in conditioner everyday. If you are going to be in the sun for a while then you will want to wear a hat or lightly spray sunscreen in your hair. The biggest thing that will help is only washing your hair under cold water and avoid styling with heat if possible. This should help your hair stay healthy and make the red last longer.

Red washes out the fastest - apparently the color molecule is largest...some junk like that.

Depends on what color your hair is. If you have light hair, you can put just about any color in your hair. If you have darker hair, you might need to bleach your hair first in order to get the color to stay.

If you want wild colors, I suggest going to a stylist, only because in my experience, the colors that they stylist uses tend to stay longer.

If you want a more natural color, just go to the drug store and buy some hair dye (make sure it says permanent). Ask one of the cosmetician to help you out if you're unsure about colors.

Your question is pretty vague. You should mention what kind of colors (natural or wild) that you were looking at. And what kind of hair color you currently have....this might be why you're not getting a lot of responses.

PERMANENT HAIR COLOUR ALMOST COMPLETELY WASHED out!?

About a week ago, I dyed my hair from a light brown to red [by red i mean actually red, not orange]. i'm 110% sure it's permanent. I washed it with the stuff that came with it, then used the regular stuff and it faded. oh, and i left the dye in for the correct amount of time too. so i'm super confused. :]

red color molecules are the largest of any color therefore it will fade faster than any other color.
if the store brand color came with stuff to shampoo your hair with it was not a permanent color. professional color doesn't come with anything so it know it was a store color. it could have been demipermanent (most likely) wich won't last as longa as it should because of the size of the color molecules.

Red dye molecules are less readily absorbed by hair because of their size, and they slip out of the hair shaft faster. Use a color protectant shampoo for RED hair, because it will have red pigment molecules in the shampoo and each time you shampoo, it will deposit a little bit of color into your hair. Or you can use a color refresher/depositor - Paul Mitchell used to make a color depositing red shampoo that is amazing - I still use it.

Wash it with shampoo for red hair... the salon kind (NOT John Frida) Also, rinse it with cool water and don't use heat very often. The red molecule is bigger than normal color molecules so it won't stay in like brown would, it will always fade pretty quick, sorry.

Is hair dye from Sally's Beauty Supply better than box dye that you'd buy at a drugstore?

I think I might be qualified to give you a professional opinion, and it might surprise you.
I've been a licensed hairdresser, salon & beauty supply manager for over 15 years. I have used probably nearly every type of product, both professional and over the counter. Sally's does sell brands intended for professional use, available to the public. You can also buy the developer strength you want as well as pre-treatments for porous ends, and good deep conditioners, and sealants to lock in color. You can custom mix colors too (if you know what you're doing). And it's cheaper to do yourself than paying me. I just hope your local Sally's has someone working who actually knows hair and hair products and can give you good advice on what to buy and how to use it. If the person there has had no cosmetology training, they are usually no more knowledgeable than the clerk at the local Walmart who sells L'Oreal dye kits
Incidentally, L'Oreal is not a bad product, and I occasionally use it or recommend it to clients.
I would not recommend cheap hair dyes like Clairol Balsam Color, but L'Oreal isn't bad at all.

another tip to help retain color, especially reds, is to wash & rinse in the coldest water you can stand, the cold helps close the cuticle tightly and keep the color from slipping out as quickly.
Red color molecules are the smallest and tend to slip faster than darker shades.
