Is red hair really a sign of persistent starvation?

I heard someone say it is. Like, if a people's been starved through generations or something their kids begin to have red hair and something. That true?

Not at all lol.

Red hair appears in people with two copies of a recessive gene on chromosome 16 which causes a mutation in the MC1R protein.
Red hair can originate from several changes on the MC1R-gene. If one of these changes is present on both chromosomes then the respective individual is likely to have red hair. This type of inheritance is described as an autosomal recessive mode of inheritance. Even if both parents do not have red hair themselves, both can be carriers for the gene and have a redheaded child.

In rare cases red hair can be associated with a disease or genetic disorder.

In cases of severe malnutrition, normally dark human hair may turn red or blonde. The condition, part of a syndrome known as kwashiorkor, is a sign of critical starvation caused chiefly by protein deficiency, (melanin found in protein is what genetically determines hair color, so a deficiency in protein would lead to a loss of eumelanin, which is an amino acid responsible for making hair and skin darker) and is common during periods of famine. (This is probably what you are referring to. this does Not happen genetically or change a persons genetics. It is the direct result of loss of protein due to starvation. It would not be carried on through generations.)
One variety of albinism (Type 3, aka rufous albinism), sometimes seen in Africans and inhabitants of New Guinea, results in red hair and red-colored skin.
Red hair is found on people lacking pro-opiomelanocortin.

Is red hair an example of incomplete dominance?

This seems very likely. In 1999, a geneticist studied this phenomena very closely. He observed a family where both the mother and the father (P generation) had blond, and four children. The three children inherited the blond hair, except the youngest who inherited the red hair.
This phenomena isn't explained in Mendel's laws of inheritance. He only mentioned that two alleles seperate during gamete formation and t hen combine.
Very strange.

In this case, blond could be dominant over red, so if the parents were both Bb, there could be a BB, Bb, Bb, and bb offspring, which would result in 3 complete dominance blondes and one totally recessive redhead. If what I remember is true, blond is totally dominant over red in human hair color.

I have bright red hair my 1st child has red hair. will his lil brother have it too? My husbands mom's hair is a shade of red looks more brown. My brother and I are the only ones who have red hair in my family. Does anyone know the chance of my 2nd son having red hair too? I hope so :)

Hair color is controlled by several genes (at least 5). There are many shades of hair color, and creating a pedigree can be quite complicated.

My dad and sister have red hair, but me and my brothers all have brown hair. I look nothing like my dad and take after my mum [hair colour and I look the spitting image].
My partner also has brown hair, however his sister has strawberry blonde hair, and his grandad has red hair.
What would be the chances of our child being born with red hair, we both have brown so would it still carry through ?

What that means is that to have red hair a person must have two copies of the red hair gene (lets call it r), if they have only one copy, their hair won't be red because the second gene will be dominant over the single red one. So if r = red hair you have to have rr to actually have red hair, if you have rx (x being anything else) then you carry a gene for red hair that can be passed on to your children but don't actually have it yourself. So considering that both of your families do have redheads there is a chance that both you and your partner have one r gene each. If you have a child then IF both of you have that r gene there is a 25% chance of your child having red hair, remember that is if you both have that one copy of the r gene, which you really can't figure out from sight alone.

Overall I would say it is a small chance, but it impossible to pinpoint an exact percentage! Besides red hair isn't a bad thing!

What hair color would our kids have if my boyfriend and I had a kid?

I have red hair and my boyfriend has dark brown hair. We are comparing if our child would have red hair (like its momma) or dark brown hair (like its daddy). We both have brown eyes and thick hair. What hair color will show up on our child if we have a child together? His dad is dark brown hair and his mom has light brown hair and my mom has blonde hair and my dad has black hair.

Human hair colour inheritance is very complicated and it involves something like 6 different genes, if my memory serves me correctly. Therefore it's very random and hard to determine with any uncertainty. If I were a human genetics specialist I might be able to give you a better idea, but I think it's unlikely that the child will have red hair, as it has a tendency to 'skip' generations, as it were. Dark brown is most likely, but they could still potentially have quite light brown hair.

Firstly, hair colour (unlike curly or straight hair) does not work in the dominant/recessive way.

Hair colour is mainly determined by the amount of eumelanin the hair has. Higher amount of eumelanin makes darker hair. Red hair has more eumelamin than blonde hair, and black hair has the most eumelanin.

The amount of eumelanin in the hair depends on many genes. To put it simply...we can say it depends on how much "ON" and "OFF" eumelamin genes the hair has.

A child will inherit 50% of his/her eumelamin genes from mom and 50% from dad. If in total, the child inherit more of the "ON" eumelamin genes, he/she will get darker hair colour. On the other hand, if in total, the child inherit more of the "OFF" eumelanin genes, his/her hair will be in a lighter shade.

Secondly, hair colour is not a sex-linked inheritance, so it will not matter if child is female or male.
