I have heard that Japanese men like blondes but do they like girls with red hair? and why do Japanese guys like girls with light colored hair so much?

Japanese men like blonde, I think this is one of the wrong information. In Japan, almost 98% of the people are Japanese. In this less than 2% of the non-Japanese, roughly half of them are Asian (mainly Chinese and Korean ). Japanese and Asians do not have blond hair naturally. People dye their hair but most of them are brown or light brown. You may find blondes in TV, Anime or porno but it's not reality nor the people's preference in real life. Walk in the streets of Tokyo, you hardly find blonde. Some Japanese may love Caucasian features but I don't think it's because of hair color.
Brown or light brown have been a trend in Japan. However, it's just a trend and recently some cosmetic companies are making ads focusing on natural beauty of the Japanese black hair.

Perhaps, Japanese reacted strangely and tried to touch your hair 50 YEARS AGO.
Now so many non-Japanese people are living in Japan and many Japanese go abroad, we know there are people whose hair is red, blond(e), brown, etc. Besides, there are many young Japanese who have dyed their hair brown, red or blond(e) !
I'm afraid there are a few people (mainly toddlers and elders?) who gaze at you especially in rural area.
But generally speaking Japanese are rather polite, so you don't need to be so nervous. Don't worry.
