will my baby have red hair?

My boyfriend mom has red hair.. and so do some of his aunts.. my boyfriend has some redish orangish collored hair in his mustache. . What are the chances my baby will have red hair... me.. my mom.. and dad have brownish blond hair though...

Red hair is recessive. This means that you have to get a red-hair gene from BOTH your mom and dad without getting any dominant hair color genes to cover it up in order to have red hair yourself.

In basic biology lessons, it's usually represented this way:
Capital B would represent brown hair.
Lowercase r would represent red hair.

If someone has these genes, one from mom and one from dad...

...then the big brown gene overrides the red hair gene and the person has brown hair. The only way for the red hair to shine through is if there are no capital letters and instead there is another red-hair gene with it.

Me personally: Red hair is in both my mom's and my dad's families, just a handful of people. So I managed to get one copy from each of them. It skipped two generations on both sides, so I was really lucky that all my grandparents were carriers and then both my parents were carriers, even though none of them actually had red hair themselves. Thus I do have red hair myself since I got two copies of red hair genes.

My son: Well, he is a red-hair CARRIER, but he doesn't have red hair. My husband has dark hair but he has freckles and a few red hairs in his beard. The freckles and beard hairs are a sign he is a possible carrier of the gene, but he himself has dark hair since dark hair genes are dominant over red, always. He passed on dark-hair genes to our son. I only have recessive red-hair genes, so that's all I can pass on to our children. My husband's dominant dark hair genes give our son dark hair, but my son could someday give me red-haired grandchildren since he is a carrier of the recessive gene.

The odds:
--If you KNOW that both people are red-hair gene carriers (because one of their parents has red hair) but neither one of them actually has red hair themself, the odds are basically 25% of having a red-haired child.
--If one person actually has red hair, and the other person is a carrier, the odds are 50%.
--If one person has red hair and the other is NOT a carrier, the odds are 0%-- but the child will carry the gene without actually having red hair.
--If two non-carriers have a child, obviously there is no chance of red hair at all, and furthermore their child can never have a redhaired child either.
--And if two redheads have a child, the odds are 100% that the baby has red hair. In fact, it can't be any other color for them.

Your case:
Your boyfriend is definitely a red-hair carrier. You know this simply because his mother has red hair. It's the only hair color gene she can pass on to him. So you know that he is a carrier. So the question is about you. If you have freckling skin, there is a chance you might carry the gene. But if you can't find anyone in your family that has red hair, I would doubt whether you do. If you don't carry the red hair gene yourself, then it will be completely impossible for you to ever give birth to a red-haired child even if the father were a blazing carrot-top. And since it kind of sounds like you might not have the gene, don't get your hopes up. ...Unless you're actually hoping to not have a redhead, in which case, relax because you're probably safe. ;)

P.S. It's actually slightly more complicated than that, because we have two hair-color genes that work together, not one. And there are rules about how recessive genes like recessive blonde and recessive red interact. This is where auburn hair and strawberry-blonde hair comes in. But if you understand the basics above, that will demonstrate your odds correctly.

Is blond hair recessive or dominant to red hair?

Q. My hair is darkish blond and so is my brothers, but my sister who is 5 years old and her hair is light reddish blond. Will it turn darker eventually cos both me and my brother's hair both were really light as kids but now that we're older its turned slightly darker. My father has blond hair just like mine but my moms is red. I was wondering whether blond hair is dominant to red or are they co-dominant?

The genetics of hair colour is still not fully understood, especially not the range of shades. There are at least two gene locations involved, one connected with dark vs blond hair and the other is concerned with red hair.

The red hair allele seems to be recessive to non-red hair and is to do with not converting a reddish pigment to a darker pigment. See link below.

There must be other genes and factors involved in fixing how much of various pigments are produced and predicting colour change is more or less impossible. My cousin had clearly brown hair for her first few years, and then it suddenly went blonde like her brother's and has been for nearly two decades now.

My husband has strawberry blond hair and blue eyes and he has the fairest skin I have ever seen with lots of freckles on his body. His sister and Mom also have strawberry blond hair. I am half Hispanic and half Italian. I have very dark hair and very dark eyes and an olive complexion.

I wonder what our baby will look like. Is there a high possibility our baby will have red hair? I always thought my genes were dominant (dark hair and eyes). I will be happy either way because I just want a healthy baby, but I'm curious about this...

Hi, Cristina!

The hair and eye color of your child(ren) will depend on whether or not you have recessive genes for blue eyes, light hair.

Your husband can only 'donate' the genes for blue eyes and red hair as his genes are doubly recessive.

If you can only 'donate' the dominant dark eyes and hair genes than the child(ren) will have the darker features.

If you have a recessive gene for blue eyes or light hair, then it is possible for the child(ren) to have these lighter features.

Why does my daughter have red hair when I have blonde and my husband has brown?

My husbands grandfather had red hair but I though that red hair was a dominant gene so one of the parents had to pass it or both of us had to pass one recessive?? I dont have any red hair on my side of the family. And her hair is VERY red lol!

This was actually discovered using pea plants by a scientist named Mendell (i can not recall his first name) during the 19th century. He was a priest and devoted his free time (practically his life) to unlock the secrets of heredity. Long story short, he discovered that there are actually gene pairs that consist of a dominant chromosome and an inferior chromosome, in any order. The only way in which the inferior gene can take over is by being paired with it's self, otherwise the dominant gene will portray itself. An example is the 23rd chromosomes, the X for female (inferior by definition) and the Y for male (dominant gene). If the pair contains a Y, like XY, the child is a boy. If XX, it is a girl. There is no 50-50, it is either the dominant is present and portrays itself, or it is only the inferior genes and they portray themselves.

Red Hair is an inferior gene, so both of you have to have been carriers (the technical name) of the gene, while your dominant color genes, blonde and brown, had decided yours. You had a 1 in 4 chance of having a red head, and sure enough that 25% won. She received the two inferior genes from you only.

I could go more in depth, but then everything gets a bit in depth with conception and fertilization and genetics, and I'm sure you barely read all of that! :)

I understand that red hair is a recessive trait but I find it quite interesting that there won't be any red heads left in years from now. Brunettes and Blondes are more of the dominant trait and it's more common. I'm just curious will like all red hair genders date people with the opposite hair color?

I think yes. I like girls with red hair, but I'm not sure if this is true. I've heard people talk about it before.

Hi my friend not sure if that is true. One of my best friends is a red head and one of her daughters is a auburn red. If It does disapper there is always Hair coloring to bring it back Ha ha ha.

Q. I am confused about the facts about the recessive and dominant genes in red hair. I have had people tell me that red hair is a recessive trait, and both sides have to carry it for it to show up. I have also had people tell me that it skips a generation. I just want to know the facts so that when my child is born and it doesn't have the same dark red hair as my husband people, his mother mostly, who is convinced it's going to be a red haired child, can be set straight about the about the whole thing. Thanks.

"Red hair is not actually a recessive gene (like blonde is), but is rather an "incomplete dominant." In the world of genes, there are dominant genes, which take over any recessive gene (brown, black), recessive genes (blonde), which will be taken over by any dominant gene, or incomplete dominent genes (red). Incomplete dominant genes will "blend" with any dominant, recessive or other incomplete dominant gene. I, for example, have "auburn" hair, which is essentially red blended with brown. Strawberry blondes are red blended with blonde.

So you've got yourself a red headed parent (let's call those genes aa) and a blonde parent, which we'll represent as bb. 100% of the offspring will have one hair color gene from each parent, or ab. This means red and blonde. Since red will always blend with other genes, the resulting hair color should be a blend of blonde and red, or strawberry blonde. In the case of my parents, which both have brown hair (let's call the brown/black genes C), either one parent or possibly both are carrying one "a" in addition to their brown or black genes, with the possibility of even a blonde thrown in (CC, Cb, or Ca). My parents are probably (Ca, CC). I'm probably a Ca, or a blend of brown and red. This result has an outcome likelihood of 50%."

Oh, this isn't for homework, I'm just curious because I'm doing a family tree type of thing.
