Why did short hair used to be so popular?

Brittany

I've noticed that pre-1920s, all women seemed to have longer hair from those old photographs and then from the 1920-late 60s, all women had really short hair or bob and then long hair was popular until the mid 70s and most women had really short hair again and same with the 80s, women had really short hair and then by the late 80s it changed and by the 90s, every girl had long hair just like today and short hair never came back. In older yearbooks that I've seen, the majority of girls had short hair in those times but now every girl has long hair and if you don't have long hair then everyone will call you a lesbian. What changed and why does society look down on women with short hair now?

Answer
If you've watched Downton Abby on PBS, a miniseries, they HAVE LONG HAIR. They put their hair up using bobby pins, and if you've watched that show, they go to bed in ponytails or braids NEATLY, even if the casts have short hair, they use hair extensions to make them look like THEY'RE LONG.

Many of the photos when my mom was a teenager, have shoulder length wavy hair, they are bobby pin set or permed in those days, just as she started perming my hair in the middle 50's.

Hairstyles changes, the 70's the beginning of the HIPPIES FREEDOM REBEL and a new breed of generation . . . started to grow their hair WILD and jeans on girls. Even though many of us wore panty hose, skirts & dresses, it was more in the 80's where people let their hair grow WILDER. I'll take that back . . it was the BEATLES from UK, who shocked the world with their LONG HAIR styles!

Short hair is coming back, because their hair had been damaged: Rihanna, Andrea Grande, Jennifer Aniston, January Jones all examples what happened to their hair.

Google: January Jones: "My Hair Is Falling Out In Clumps" 1-28-13 To quote Joni Mitchell, "you don't know what you got till your thick hair is gone."

"23 years old Rihanna is well known for changing her hairstyle and hair colour on a regular basis and it looks as though all those treatments have finally begun to take their toll on her mane and perhaps her common sense." US Showbiz 2-18-12 Rihanna has reportedly paid $23,500 for an emergency haircut after hers was ruined in a sauna, to fly out hair stylist from L.A. to London..The Province 3-1-12. She wore a long haired blonde wig during the Grammy 2-10-13.

Ariana Grande Opens up: "More Fake Hair than every drag queen on earth." The 20-year-old explained that she essentially destroyed her natural hair, when she had to bleach and dye it red "every other week" on the Nickelodeon show "Sam & Cat." She currently wear wigs now!

Google: Jennifer Aniston's Hair Disaster Nov. 6-13.
The reason Jen went for the ol' snip-a-roo wasn't to be on trend. It's because her hair is fried and falling out after getting a Brazilian Blowout. You know those amazing salon hair treatments that can make the thickest, frizziest hair Pantene commercial-esque? She didn't come to me for advice, I could have said "NO don't!"
It's been all over the news, but why wasn't her hairstylist informed her, they're partners in the new hair product, on which she is a spokesperson! Now embarrassing! Now, she's wearing hair extensions!

Short hair had become more popular in the 90's or later, also because women went back to work, living single with kids to support, they have less & less time for pampering and it's easier to take care of them, plus kids, house work, work outside the home, etc. When they want a makeover, short hair is the way to go! It takes 20 years of bad hair days, for women to figure out what to do with their hair, and it takes 20 years of trying to fix it, using various hair products that can do more harm than good. It is part of a billion dollar business.

If you look @ the wives of King Henry's 6 wives THEY ALL HAVE HAIR DOWN TO THEIR FEET and they were all black hair.

How many inches does your hair grow in a year?

Q. my hair is way past my shoulders and im jw how long it will be in a year?

Answer
Hair is actually dead material when it leaves it's root - otherwise it would hurt very much when your hairdresser works with his scissor. Most people know that, but do you know about these facts:

A blonde head of hair has usually much more strands than red or dark haired heads.
Hair consists mainly of keratin, which is also responsible for the elasticity of fingernails.
A single hair has a thickness of 0.02 - 0.04mm, so that 20 - 50 hair strands next to each other make one millimeter.
Hair is strong as a wire of iron. It rips after applying a force equivalent to 60kg, only after it stretched itself for about 70%.
Even on a good hair day, everyone loses at least 40 to 100 strands.
The average scalp has 100,000 strands, or just fewer than 1000 per square inch.
We are born with all our hair follicles. Some are programmed to grow pigmented hair (as on our scalp) up to 3 feet in length.
In America in '96, 38 million men and 19 million women experience common hair loss determined by heredity.
The trait for baldness can be passed down through paternal or maternal genes.
Hormone imbalance and crash dieting can trigger temporary hair loss.
Hair biology

The root of a hair strand sticks in a bag in the skin. The strand is pushed out of this bag about 0.35mm per day, making an average growth rate of 1cm, or half of an inch, per month. The growth rate is however very much related to the individual person, his age, his diet etc.
Healthy hair has an average lifetime of 2-6 years. After a rest period of three months the single hair falls out, and a new strand starts to grow out of the bag. The lifetime depends on circumstances and person, too.
The lifetime of hair is responsible for the maximum of hair length you can have. Waist length hair takes about 6 years to grow out from a short hair cut, periodic trims included. If your hair has a life cycle of 2 years, you will never achieve a nice waist length mane.

Hair help please? D:?

Q. My natural hair color is red/ginger and curly. A while ago I bleached it out and decided to dye it purple. I tried getting it out, and it turned out kinda puke green/blue so we just dyed it back to purple, and it looks double cool with knobs. (Which means awesome, for those of you who don't understand.) My hair wasn't in the best condition before all of that dying, due to straightening and I've had a couple inches of fried hair taken off already. Now I don't wanna fry my hair even more with a bunch of straightening but I really really hate my curls. I also want to get my hair cut kind of like this (https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=images&cd=&cad=rja&docid=3TdKRSfFGtOrZM&tbnid=mv-P8CC6T_t7TM:&ved=0CAUQjRw&url=http%3A%2F%2Fuselessdevice.deviantart.com%2Fart%2FKagamine-Len-pre-Cosplay-test-220854220&ei=8HuiUYf5Koaa8wT3mIHYAg&bvm=bv.47008514,d.eWU&psig=AFQjCNF3iiWlv3HT6xJyAPIl3S0jdjHJVQ&ust=1369689110325442) from my usual boring hair with bangs. I love styles like that, but I'd have to straighten my hair every day for it to look right. Any solutions, people? P.S. I kind of want some kind of punky haircut if you guys don't think my straightening-without-frying idea will work and you have suggestions.

Answer
Heat & chemicals are hair's worst enemies. If you want curly hair, (or straight hair to tame your curly hair) look @ videos or hairstyles of women in the late 40's or 50's, and see how healthy & silky their curly hair was. Have you seen Miracle on 34th Street or Downton Abbey? Their hair wasn't styled by professional hairstylists. They were styled by maids. No hair oil, no serum, no hair sprays, and no gels with just the use of shampoo & conditioner. Another way to find the secret to beautiful hair? Find someone with beautiful healthy curls or silky, shiny (not greasy) straight hair and ask him or her to share secrets, preferably someone who is 40-60 years older than YOU. I have 5 decades, so you're getting the answers you need, right here! I won't charge you a penny!
Your hair is envy from us stick straight haired girls! If you know how to care for your hair type, you won't have this problem. Melina Kanakaredes, Keri Russell in Felicity are examples who has hair like yours and they've got beautiful wavy hair. Watch Deandre Brackensick on American Idol. Google them. Very good example with very long & very tightly curls: watch Derek Hough dances with Brilynn Rakes, 17. Brilynn was chosen to dance on âDWTSâ when producers saw incredible videos of the blind girlâs skills. Her hair was styled many ways w/out the use of heat! Better yet, watch Pretty Woman - Julia Roberts's hair in that movie! In the 90's, they didn't have many hair products or heating tools and they also styled her hair many ways!

Shampoo. Condition. Add a small dollop (size of a quarter) of gel to keep hair from frizzing. Give it a final rinse with carbonated or sparkling water. Sparkling water reduces frizz because of its low pH level. This is a good treatment if you often let your curls air-dry because it will help to eliminate the frizz caused by humidity. Towel dry, scrunch with gel like Samy, or hand lotion, blow-dry using a diffuser briefly, tousle the hair, finger comb, shake your head & you're good to go. If you don't have a diffuser, use a blow heat dryer on low for 5 mins. Upside down blow drying. Bend at your waist, turn your head down and blow dry. Straighten up to a voluminous, super full mane! If your hair needs longer than 5 mins to dry your hair, air dry SOME, get dressed, have breakfast, do your homework, get online etc. while air dryer, then blow dry briefly concentrating @ the roots. Shake your hair and you're good to go!

When you wake up, instead of shampooing again, keep a bottled water filled with water/conditioner and spray on your hair. Scrunch, finger comb and you're good to go! Google Haley Rinehart - American Idol she's got long beautiful curly hair! When my hair was permed in the 80's, my waist-length hair looked like hers. Look @ my hair now.

Wear a scarf on windy days to avoid frizz.

One method to make it look fuller, add body, tame the curls, bouncier, thicker, SEXIER, softer & shinier hair is to set your hair with plastic curlers (not Velcro) after you towel dry, you'll end up with uniform balance of curls. Blow dry briefly while curling them in curlers. Take them out, and finger comb to style. When you're finished, use your fingers to shake your hair allowing it to fall naturally into place. Used by the best hair color models, and the fashion industry, like Victoria Secret Fashion Show Dec. 2009, 2010, 2011 & 2012, America's Next Top Models, EXPRESS, Toddlers & Tiaras, Dance Moms, Dancing with the Stars, Kris Jenner, Kim Kardashian, even used on Oprah's hair . . . . and continued to be used today where salons care about pampering your hair. When you see hair on TV a hair color commercial, they're not done by curling or straightening tools. Hair that shines like that and feels like hair, not hay, has to be done by the best hair tools available w/out damaging to the hair. When you take the curlers out, finger comb to style or lightly brush. Tousle the hair up. or shake your hair. You can use large, medium or small curlers, that depends on the length of your hair. Think of JLo's hair, she was voted as the Sexiest Woman by People magazine and Glamour's Woman of the Year 2011.

Chemicals can enter the body through the skin.

> > > Hair dye chemicals linked to cancer
London, Feb 20, 2013 I've been saying that since 2009.
Hair dyes, which include home hair colouring kits and those used at pricey salons, are linked to deadly cancer-causing chemicals, warn scientists. In 2009 the Mail revealed that women who used hair dyes more than nine times a year had a 60% greater risk of contracting blood cancer.
A year later the European Commission banned 22 hair dyes which put long-term users at risk of bladder cancer. < < < <â¨

Parents really hate my hair and its annoying me!?

Q. My parents really hate my hair style now as they think i look a 'nob' in their words. My family are muslims and i don't follow the religion anymore cause i have different opinions but that isn't the case. Am growing my hair cause i hate the short boring styles to do anime hair styles but because am asian its doubly difficult as i have very very thick strong hair and they keep threatening to kick me out or cut all my hair off when am asleep. Obviously i have to go hairdressers every so often but i also get new highlights in my hair every 3-4 months which they hate even more! I love my style the way it is now because i feel as though it suits the personality i have because am a rocker/metal fan and a big anime fan so i like it but they absolutely hate it and its hurting my self esteem in the sense they make me feel self concious about my self. I think what they hate is the thickness of my hair and they say it looks all boofy when i straighten it so is there any advice to get thinner hair from thick without thinning my hair out cause i already get it thinned at hair dressers. Also i have black hair and usually get darkish brown highlights and next 2-3 weeks am getting dark red in so it makes them hate it even more! -.-
I'd move out if i could but am 18 and not working, my plan is to have to take the annoying comments for the next 3 years whilst i go uni after college, find a job to pay enough for me to live on my own because i have soo many ideas in mind but am trying to play safe but obviously they hate it..

Answer
Well, yeah? They hated my long hair for over 50 years! I've moved out of the house since age 21, and have styled my hair thousands of different styles since then. . . . . a family of my own, so it's not that I was still a kid.

They just hate long hair period. Until one day, my mom heard compliments about my hair when out shopping. I looked @ her and she finally had a small smile, to let me know she 'approved'.

You can either move out, continue fighting & pleasing them, or do what they asked from you. In the 70's, everyone had long hair, but I couldn't, but I did anyway.

You have thick hair, you don't want to thin them, unless you're cutting split ends. They will just grow weird. Chemicals are damaging to the hair, and too much of that causes hair loss, but I can't tell you not to stop using chemicals, but I'd rather say: cutting or thinning the hair is better than messing with chemicals. Even Lourdes, Madonna's DD, had an undercut because her mom is very strict, instead of chemicals do that. Chemicals can enter the body through the skin.

Chemicals also causes cancer. Google hair dyes & cancer.
Google: A 38-year old mother left in a coma after using hair dye. 11-22-11. SHE DYED HER HAIR MANY TIMES BEFORE, USING THE SAME BRAND.

One example: MY HAIR DRESSER DYED MY HAIR GREY. I've been crying for the last 2 hours, I want to kill that bish for destroying what was amazing bleach blonde hair. AND to make things worse, she cut my extensions WAY too short.

What's the difference between 1940's and 1950's hair and makeup styles?

I've watched some makeup tutorials on YouTube, and seen that style elsewhere, and sometimes it's attributed to 40's and other times, 50's. The curly hair, red lip, thick liner with a flick.

Anyone know the difference (if there is one!)?

Answer
Before I answer this, let me just say Old Hollywood is my passion. I watch movies from 1910s-70s every. single. day. So I have seen hundreds of movies, and most from 30s, 40s, and 50s..so I have experience with this subject lol

There's not a difference in makeup from the 40s and 50s. The only change from 30s to 40s to 50s are the hairstyles and clothes.. (such as pin curls were only popular in the 20s and 30s and NOT the 40s.) ..and eyebrows. (Thicker eyebrows started coming back in the 40s, but before that they were tweezed/waxed to a thin arch.)

In the 1950s, a lot more women (particularly teenagers) started to wear their hair down and wavy (never more than shoulder length). Don't get me wrong, a lot still wore victory rolls (Those curly rolls you see on the women's heads), but this was leading into the late 60s, and by then victory rolls were nonexistent (on the younger generation, anyways.)

Why do model desirable successful Black Guys/Mixed Black Males end up with dating other races?

Q. Wentworth Miller (Voted most attractive male in Europe)

Kobe Bryant

Will Monfret

Tyson Beckford

Why is it always the best of black men and mixed black guys with white women when white men are with black women it's like their the leftovers, they all look like their 50+ years old and blood shot eyes, usually red hair too.

Why do black girls dream of rich and wealthy men and they end up with the worst?

Is hazel eyes and brown hair too dominate to have a blonde?

Q. I'm pregnant and my boyfriend has been a bleach blonde and light blue eyed since birth. I have brown hair but it's getting darker by the years, and hazel eyes (light enough to see my center black ball) what would be my % of chance that my baby will have light blonde, blue eyed child? Are my features dominate?

Answer
It really depends. Hair color and eye color depend on other traits as well as what the parents contribute.

Eyes....your boyfriend has blue which looks like this bb you have brown eyes, which could be one of two....either Bb or BB. It depends on what genes you got from your parents. If you have Bb then you have a 50% chance of blue and 50% other. If you have BB then you will most likely have a brown or green eyed child. But like I said, color depends on more. A brown eyed couple who are both BB could potentially have a blue eyed child if anyone in their direct past had blue eyes, like a parent, grandparent, great grandparent...and so on. Since it is recessive, it can be hidden for many generations.

The same goes for hair color. Darker is dominant. Now, having said that, I have green/gray eyes and my husband has light blue. We both have medium brown hair. We have two daughters. One has red/blond hair and very pale blue eyes. The other has brown hair and deep blue eyes. He has two other children with brown haired women, and those two kids are blond with blue eyes.

Hope this helps. And congratulations
