How do you dye natural red hair another color at home?

Q. My natural hair colour is a dark red/alburn. I want to dye it a dark brown. I have went to the salon twice to have this done and both times the permanent dye washed out with the first wash (and yes it was permanent). Someone said to strip my hair first but I don't want to do that if it's not going to help.

I do not want to go to a salon as my husband would flip with the costs... any advice? Do I have to buy a hair stripper or can I make up something safe to use with products from home?

Answer
I'd bleach it not for long and then wait a couple days to colour it otherwise it'll be phucked.

Best at home red hair color?

ahaha.

I dyed my hair at home a few months ago with L'oreal Superior Preference medium auburn and I'm planning on re-dyeing it but I'm looking for a more vibrant red color. What's the best at-home brand for vibrant red hair color? I'm thinking of trying Feria but I'm not sure. My natural color is a medium brown.

Answer
Use Feria!! I love their reds! They last for a good amount of time too! Avoid using Garnier, they fade after one week. Clairol is good dye but stick with Feria.

I'm rinsing my hair & I need color help/?

I sprayed my hair the color Red Wine By Jerome Russell Temp'ry spray & I'm going to rinse it , Bordeaux By Avatar. Do these two colors seem similar? Do Rinses Mix with your hair Color , OR does it cover it completely?

Answer
rinses only work maybe for a week or less. The 2 colors r very similar, but the shade difference maybe a little alarming. hair color goes by a numbered system, 1-10 1 being clank and 10 being white. so check the numbers on the rinses you most likely going to end up with a rich deep red. u might wanna think about semi permanent color. i'm a hair dresser and do semi alll the time, i haven't used permanent yet b/c i love to change the colors a lot!. semi does require monthly application. but alot less work

Does The Riveting Red Shampoo and Conditioner Change the Color of Black Hair ? ?

Q. Half of my hair is Black and the other Red i bought the products to help my hair color stay red longer but iwonder if the black hair will change color .

Answer
It will not change the color of black hair. I just recently dyed my hair red so I did a bunch of research on hair care, and the Riveting Red Shampoo and Conditioner deposit amounts of red to brighten up SPECIFICALLY red, strawberry blonde, etc. hair. It basically brightens up and keeps hair vibrant. Black hair would be way too dark for it to change anything. Plus, it doesn't have any chemicals in it so I can't imagine how it would change the color of black hair. But it does add moisture and decreases frizz, so it definitely won't hurt. :)

What Color Should I Dye My Hair And What Brand?

Rachel

So I'm dying my hair an unnatural color for the summer and originally was planning to dye it a bright fire truck red. I'm dying it today or Tomorrow and I'm in between the colors red teal or lilac. I have dark brown hair (I am bleaching) dark brown eyes and a medium skin tone. What color do you think would look best for me and what brand do you recommend ? Thanks so much if you answered!! Have a nice summer!

Answer
Dyeing your hair in the summer is the worst thing that could happen to your hair: Chlorine, the sun, all fades the dye faster and the sun causing your hair to get sunburned more.
Red, white & blue, it will go well for the Fourth!

Overlapping dye onto previously colored hair is what creates dullness and dryness. If you color your hair @ home or salon, let your roots grow out as long as you can stand, so the line of demarcation is easier to spot. Only run color through the lengths for five minutes to refresh the ends. To extend the time between touch-ups, use a gloss and deep -conditioning treatments. They will help smooth cuticles roughed up by daily wear & tear, and the hair will look shinier. ~ Harry Josh, hairstylist of the celebrities.

Celebrity wears two-tone hair dye all the time, trying to grow out their dye. They call that the ombre style.

Style meets chemistry meets biology: We're talking hair coloring.

Playing with chemicals is not like playing with clothes, or doing a manicure, there are penalties for playing chemicals in the lab. Even hair color experts at the salon are not rocket scientists, they do a bang up dye jobs to their clients or their own hair.

Chemicals can enter the body through the skin.

Hair dyes, which include home hair colouring kits and those used at pricey salons, are linked to deadly cancer-causing chemicals, warn scientists. In 2009 the Mail revealed that women who used hair dyes more than nine times a year had a 60% greater risk of contracting blood cancer.
A year later the European Commission banned 22 hair dyes which put long-term users at risk of bladder cancer. < < < <â¨

The chemical is not new and is present in a number of brands of dark hair colours, acting to help adhere the dye to the hair so that it doesn't wash out. PPD is sometimes added to black henna tattoos and that using them is not safe. Allergic reactions usually begin within two to 10 days following application. One bad reaction can lead to sensitivities to other products such as hair dye, sunblock and some types of clothing dyes. Oftentimes, it's using the product a second or third time.

New hair trends for summer 2013?

Ooberdoobe

I currently have dark brown hair with ombre towards the ends. I have had it for almost a year and now eevveerryyoonne wants it or is just now getting it. So I want to change it up a bit. I want something I can do that wont fade too fast and isn't an "un-natural" color. ( No blues, purples, pinks, yellows, ect.) I have had red highlights before (subtle red) I have asian hair so my hair doesn't get damaged too much. I do for one like the pastel colors some people have, although i heard it was hard to achieve. So does anyone out there know a good dyed hair style I should go for?

Answer
hmm...you could do a reverse ombré with a darker color at the ends or a lighter color up top, which is really popular right now. but it sounds like youre sorta sick of ombré. maybe you can get streaks of a lighter brown chestnut in your hair or highlights. these are all trends that I've seen but not seen everywhere.

.

I hope i helped(:

Will I damage my hair?

hazel

My hair was dyed black and I used color oops to take the black out so I could dye it red. An hour or two later, I put the red dye in and it came out black! Why? Also, I want to get another box of the red dye I got today and try it again. Will this damage my hair? Thanks in advance ð

Answer
When you dye your hair (especially at home) the outcome is always unpredictable. And the reason "Color Oops" didn't work is because it only strips away surface level colors, not deep ones and then covers them up! And the Color Oops alone has damaged your hair SO MUCH! You need hair stylist. A professional one. Someone who can look at your hair's damage level, porosity, thickness, and history to determine exactly what they should use to get your hair exactly where it needs to be with the least amount of damage. Plus the hair dye a hair dresser uses is different than anything you can buy over the counter. If you are trying to save money go to a cosmetology school where the students are trained and supervised by industry professionals.

What percentage of the world population has red hair, and why?

Butterfly

Why is red hair so rare? Sources please if you can.

Answer
hers a link. theres more info. veeeerrry interesting.

Some of us are drawn to the color Red like a bull in Spain, relentless, fixed, and pure. Less than four percent of the world population has naturally red hair. That is less than two percent in America. The gene for Ginger hair was discovered in 1995 and this discovery got little attention. This is not consistent as red heads have gotten lots of it. Some negative such as the association with witches and a crazy temper. Some are positive, such as our love for Lucy, The Little Mermaid, and the Feminist icon of Lilith, the first wife of Adam who insisted on sexual equality. So many deceptive MYTHS are of common knowledge concerning the crimson strand. Read up on the TRUE history of this striking genetic endowment.
----------------
Red hair appears in people with two copies of a recessive gene on chromosome 16 which causes a mutation in the MC1R protein. It is associated with fair skin color, lighter eye colors (gray, blue, green, and hazel), freckles, and sensitivity to ultraviolet light.//

Biochemistry and genetics
A close-up view of red hairThe pigment pheomelanin gives red hair its distinctive color. Red hair has far more of the pigment pheomelanin than it has of the dark pigment eumelanin.

The genetics of red hair, discovered in 1997, appear to be associated with the melanocortin-1 receptor (MC1R), which is found on chromosome 16. Red hair is associated with fair skin color due to low concentrations of eumelanin throughout the body of those with red hair. This lower melanin-concentration confers the advantage that a sufficient concentration of important Vitamin D can be produced under low light conditions. However, when UV-radiation is strong (like in regions close to the equator) the lower concentration of melanin leads to several medical disadvantages, such as a higher risk of skin cancer.

The MC1R recessive variant gene that gives people red hair and fair skin is also associated with freckles, though it is not uncommon to see a redhead without freckles. Eighty percent of redheads have an MC1R gene variant,[5] and the prevalence of these alleles is highest in Scotland and Ireland. The alleles that code for red hair occur close to the alleles that affect skin color, so it seems that the phenotypic expression for lighter skin and red hair are interrelated.

Red hair can originate from several different changes on the MC1R-gene. If one of these changes is present on both chromosomes then the respective individual is likely to have red hair. This type of inheritance is described as an autosomal recessive mode of inheritance. Even if both parents do not have red hair themselves, both can be carriers for the gene and have a redheaded child. (Red hair genetics).

Possibility Of Red Hair?

Charlotte

Hi there! My husband and I are currently expecting out first child, a baby girl who is due October 14th.

I was wondering what the chance of her being a ginger would be- my dad had ginger hair, and when he and my mum had me, I came out with his hair color. My grandmother also had the red hair. My husband has light blonde hair.

We're both hoping for a little red-head.

So what are the chances? (I know we won't know until after she's here, but I suppose guessing doesn't hurt.)

Thank you everyone!

xx

Answer
you have red hair with is recessive meaning (rr) for red and red genes, and your husband has blonde hair which means he could have Blr or BlBl for genes, (blond/red underlying recessive gene, or just pure blond)
Doing a punnent square (genetics predictor square) here are the results you COULD have

Bl Bl
r (blr) (blr)
r (blr) (blr)

Bl r
r (blr) (rr)
r (blr) (rr)

The top lines in the squares of the possibilities for your husbands genes, (Bl Bl all blonde) or (Bl r blonde and non dominant red)

the ( ) are the outcomes possible from those combinations.

If he had that gene, you have a 50% chance of a red haired baby, he doesn't you have 0% chance,
so since you don't know what gene he has, you have a total of a 25% chance your baby will have red hair

will my baby have red hair?

Brooklyn

My boyfriend mom has red hair.. and so do some of his aunts.. my boyfriend has some redish orangish collored hair in his mustache. . What are the chances my baby will have red hair... me.. my mom.. and dad have brownish blond hair though...

Answer
Red hair is recessive. This means that you have to get a red-hair gene from BOTH your mom and dad without getting any dominant hair color genes to cover it up in order to have red hair yourself.

In basic biology lessons, it's usually represented this way:
Capital B would represent brown hair.
Lowercase r would represent red hair.

If someone has these genes, one from mom and one from dad...
Br
...then the big brown gene overrides the red hair gene and the person has brown hair. The only way for the red hair to shine through is if there are no capital letters and instead there is another red-hair gene with it.

rr

Me personally: Red hair is in both my mom's and my dad's families, just a handful of people. So I managed to get one copy from each of them. It skipped two generations on both sides, so I was really lucky that all my grandparents were carriers and then both my parents were carriers, even though none of them actually had red hair themselves. Thus I do have red hair myself since I got two copies of red hair genes.

My son: Well, he is a red-hair CARRIER, but he doesn't have red hair. My husband has dark hair but he has freckles and a few red hairs in his beard. The freckles and beard hairs are a sign he is a possible carrier of the gene, but he himself has dark hair since dark hair genes are dominant over red, always. He passed on dark-hair genes to our son. I only have recessive red-hair genes, so that's all I can pass on to our children. My husband's dominant dark hair genes give our son dark hair, but my son could someday give me red-haired grandchildren since he is a carrier of the recessive gene.

The odds:
--If you KNOW that both people are red-hair gene carriers (because one of their parents has red hair) but neither one of them actually has red hair themself, the odds are basically 25% of having a red-haired child.
--If one person actually has red hair, and the other person is a carrier, the odds are 50%.
--If one person has red hair and the other is NOT a carrier, the odds are 0%-- but the child will carry the gene without actually having red hair.
--If two non-carriers have a child, obviously there is no chance of red hair at all, and furthermore their child can never have a redhaired child either.
--And if two redheads have a child, the odds are 100% that the baby has red hair. In fact, it can't be any other color for them.

Your case:
Your boyfriend is definitely a red-hair carrier. You know this simply because his mother has red hair. It's the only hair color gene she can pass on to him. So you know that he is a carrier. So the question is about you. If you have freckling skin, there is a chance you might carry the gene. But if you can't find anyone in your family that has red hair, I would doubt whether you do. If you don't carry the red hair gene yourself, then it will be completely impossible for you to ever give birth to a red-haired child even if the father were a blazing carrot-top. And since it kind of sounds like you might not have the gene, don't get your hopes up. ...Unless you're actually hoping to not have a redhead, in which case, relax because you're probably safe. ;)

P.S. It's actually slightly more complicated than that, because we have two hair-color genes that work together, not one. And there are rules about how recessive genes like recessive blonde and recessive red interact. This is where auburn hair and strawberry-blonde hair comes in. But if you understand the basics above, that will demonstrate your odds correctly.

Temporary Hair Color Shampoos?

I want to temporarily color my hair, but I don't want the damage of a normal dye, because I have very fine, somewhat dry hair. I've heard of a brand called "Jason" that has all natural, hair coloring shampoos. Have you ever heard of it, did it work, and would you recommend it? If it's not a good brand, what is? I am shooting for red hair, but not really bright. More like a brown/red. My hair is naturally a medium-toned mouse-brown color.

Answer
those shampoos will not work for ur hair color.to have a red hair color and with ur natural hair color you maybe have to use perminant color. see when u have darker hair color than what you want, you have to lighten the hair for it to show up. think of a black piece of paper if u draw with orange or red on it your not going to see it, if u draw with white on it then go over the white with red or orange then you'll definetly see it ! so i would suggest a semi perminent like Redekn shades EQ that would be between the shades of 5cb, or 5rv or 5rb. those are all really good, and semi perminent hair color contains no ammonia so it actually make the hair softer and more sealed on your ends. if your going to do with at home color then stay in the same family of the level 5cb or 5rv or 5br, box color will weaken the hair, hope this helps

Dark brown to Auburn Hair color? (Temporary)?

Megan

So I have darkish/medium brown hair and I really want to dye it more of an auburn, or reddish brown color. The thing is, my mom won't let me permanently die it, but she might let me do a temporary dye. I was just wondering if I have dark brown hair, could I go to an auburn hair color without bleaching? I also don't want that hair color that's just brown mixed in with auburn (it looks gross and messy..) so is it possible to get a regular auburn hair color using temporary dye with darkish/medium brown hair?

Answer
No, impossible. Temporary is added on top of whatever you have. The dark will always show under whatever lighter colour you put on top.

To get auburn, you need to remove the dark. There is no other way. This is a permanent change, you cannot do it "temporarily". You CAN put a deep auburn/mahogany/red on top of the dark brown, and you will get a close representation of auburn (a dark deep auburn), but it will not be the same, and it will fade with time. This is a semi-permanent colour. But you cannot do this with a temporary rinse.

How To Keep Red Hair Vibrant?

punkrock10

My hair is auburn and sometimes it loses its vibrancy. Its usually a beautiful colour, and I'm trying to keep it like that... any tips on enhancing my red tones?

Answer
Use shampoo meant to enhance red hair color. You can also use a toner when it starts to look a little dingy. But if its natural read just try using dish soap once or twice a month to remove product build up.

Best color deposting/enhancing shamp/cond for red hair?

Nikke

I have color hair that is bright red and I love it...for about 8 days....then it tends to fade and I have to color it again after 3 weeks. Is there a salon brand that you would recommend that is color depositing or enhancing. I see that John Frieda has a line...but I would really rather use a salon brand.

I am using WEN and Dumb Blonde shampoo and conditioner on alternating days. But I would like to change to one that is for redheads.

Suggestions preferably from salon professionals, but all answers welcome

Answer
red has less pigments in it than all colors so its the color that fades the fastest. have shampoos and cond. for red, like john frieda has. I tried a lot of non salon red, and yes, they don't last very long, but that is the only good advice i can give u, other than that, maybe call up your salon.

Question about getting bright red hair?

Jessica Ll

For about a year now I've been trying and trying to get my hair bright red. I have used Live XXL and L'Oreal and it dyes most of my hair a darkish red but my roots are always really bright red. It also starts to fade very quickly. I have recently left school and decided to dye my hair a really bright red so I bought online 'Wella peroxide cream' and 'Wella Koleston Perfect vibrant red' colour. It should arrive in a few days but I want to know whether the dye will work on my hair since i've dyed it so much. I have also purchased a colour stripper so I can strip my hair before I dye it. Will this work? Is there any other methods to make my hair all the same colour this time? Or to lighten my hair before I dye it? Thanks in advance.

Answer
First dye your hair as blonde as you can and then dye it red

Which is better to use, Wella Koleston or Wella Color Charm?

Should I use the same one or better suggestions for other brands of colors. I used Garnier Nutrisse sweet pepper (intense auburn).

Answer
The problem with color that you buy in a store is that they ALL use the same volume developer; 20 volume. A quick lesson in hair color here: In order to go from light to dark you need to deposit color and not lift color. When I say volume this is what it means in normal terms. 10 volume will lift one level of color, 20 volume two levels, 30 volume 3 levels and 40 volume 4 levels. So when you bought that stuff in the store it not only deposited color but it lifted 2 levels. So you are left with a lighter color than what you want. Plus with reds they tend to fade quickly, especially if you use 20 volume.

Now for what to do to fix your problem. You need to go to a beauty supply store or better yet a hair dresser. But if you choose to do this yourself go to the beauty supply store, pick out the color you want and buy a 10 volume bottle of developer (peroxide) Then when you color your hair you will get a much truer color. 10 volume always worked great for me and I have a light strawberry blonde hair color naturally. I hope this helps you! Good luck!!!

do color glazes work?

RTSGIRL

I went and had my hair dyed red but the color is fading, any ideas? I saw that John Frieda has a color glaze to use in the shower will this help? Thanks

Answer
red fades so quick! the color glaze will help but with red hair its best to get it dyed every 4 weeks so it stays. also after you keep dying with the red it will stay longer each time

Have I colored my hair just one too many times?

Q. Hair history:
6th grade: Blonde highlights
7th grade: Blonde bangs (I just let them grow out on their own)
9th grade summer: red hair. -faded to light brown-
10th grade: Black hair, with random color patches in it.
10th grade winter: After the last coloring faded, I dyed it flat black.
10th grade summer: Bleached blonde spot
11th grade: Failed attempt to undo the blonde spot, black dye, spot turned blue.
So now it's the winter of my 11th grade year, and the dye on the part of my hair that I didn't bleach is a really odd gray/brown/black color.
I used Garnier hair color, in case it matters. All of my other hair colorings have just faded back to my natural medium brown. Will this one too? Or will I have to go get the pigment stripped from it, and redye it again?
Kay. I know it isn't good to color it that much, but my hair is EXCEPTIONALLY healthy, for any standards, I know how to take care of myself. Coloring your hair now, won't affect it later, because after it leaves to scalp it's already dead.

Answer
Neh, I've colored my hair probably far more times than that. I would say, go to a salon, and just have them cut off whatever isn't already your natural color. Or, if it's still most of your hair that is colored and looking odd, ask them to strip it, and get it to as close as your natural color as possible, until the un-dyed portion is to the length you want?

Why do most protagonists in anime have red hair?

MRUBCfans:

Ichigo from Tokyo Mew Mew
ichigo from Bleach
Duck from Princess TuTu
Lina Inverse from Slayers

those are just off the top of my head, but I know a bunch more.
when i say red hair, I mean red-head, as in orange

Answer
Because Red Hair is the least Common Color and so they want them to stand out.l

And also, people with Red Hair are Stereotyped as being loud, strong, and passionate because Red Hair was known to the Japanese as the Color of the Russians and Swedes. And they were very, very strong, loud and passionate in History.

So Red Hair = A character that you want people to know and who are very powerful.

Need hair color expertise..?

Patricia

Naturally my hair is a medium brown. I had honey blonde highlights until recently (two days ago).. I colored my hair a chestnut brown. It was a level 2.. 28 wash dye.. so not permanet. It has a reddish tint that I don't really care for. So... I just went to Sally's an bought the ION permanent creme in medium brown. Will this work? How about coloring it two days after using a level 2 dye?? Any advice? Don't want any copper or red tones! Help! Thank you for all responses!! :))

Answer
Going dark to light WILL give you red, because that is the in between color from brown to blonde. If you want to eliminate the red, you must bleach first then dye. but not without the usual warnings and cautions of over processing your hair. As time goes by, you will not have to bleach the whole head, simply the roots.

Processing your whole head will ruin your hair. And doing this too often, while experimenting with color is going to damage your scalp, and cuticle. Caution and extreme conditioning, no heat or styling products should be used while you do this: find your color.

You should wait MINIMUM of 2 weeks before processing again. Sooner, you risk damage. Get into the habit of working ONLY the roots. Cellophane and clear tape off the rest of your hair so you don't get bleach on it. Bleach will remove it. Loreal's Super Blonde had three shades of blonde to take you from brown to blonde with no red tones. If you let the mixture get dry on your head, it won't color without going red. If you sweat, it won't bleach without red. If you take it off too soon, it will be red.

Taking yourself to a salon when you FIRST want to try a big change is ALWAYS best, so you don't over process. They will do it once, right, and the first time. without damaging your hair. You'll end up spending 60 bucks on chemicals, anyway. And then NOT be happy with the color.

The salon will do it for that much and get it right, in the beginning!

Then, you can simply do the touch ups your self at home, roots only and keep the perfect color.

P.s.. WATCH how they do it, so you can learn and ask how to prevent banding when you touch up the roots. They will be awesome and show you! Oh.. dont tell them you won't be back, either! heheh

P.s... treat your hair to a nice luxurious olive oil hot oil treatment.. you poor hair would love you!

Do you think red hair color is too much?

black momm

I asked my mom to have red hair like this, since it looks good with red/yellow skin tone like this picture.

http://www.eurweb.com/images/articles/200707/keyshia_cole(005-classic-headshot-red-hair-med).jpg

My mom says its too much for my age, I agree.
What do you think is the right age to wear red hair?

Answer
i don't think unnatural red hair color looks good on any people no matter the skin tone, but if its a natural good color and looks nice i don't see why not.
although i DO NOT reccomend bleaching your hair first at all to get the red unless your willing to get your roots touched up every month or so and grow your hair all the way out again if you don't like it.make sure if you dye it to take good care of your hair and use a good conditioner.

Is red hair really a sign of persistent starvation?

Magic * Me

I heard someone say it is. Like, if a people's been starved through generations or something their kids begin to have red hair and something. That true?

Answer
Not at all lol.

Red hair appears in people with two copies of a recessive gene on chromosome 16 which causes a mutation in the MC1R protein.
Red hair can originate from several changes on the MC1R-gene. If one of these changes is present on both chromosomes then the respective individual is likely to have red hair. This type of inheritance is described as an autosomal recessive mode of inheritance. Even if both parents do not have red hair themselves, both can be carriers for the gene and have a redheaded child.

In rare cases red hair can be associated with a disease or genetic disorder.

In cases of severe malnutrition, normally dark human hair may turn red or blonde. The condition, part of a syndrome known as kwashiorkor, is a sign of critical starvation caused chiefly by protein deficiency, (melanin found in protein is what genetically determines hair color, so a deficiency in protein would lead to a loss of eumelanin, which is an amino acid responsible for making hair and skin darker) and is common during periods of famine. (This is probably what you are referring to. this does Not happen genetically or change a persons genetics. It is the direct result of loss of protein due to starvation. It would not be carried on through generations.)
One variety of albinism (Type 3, aka rufous albinism), sometimes seen in Africans and inhabitants of New Guinea, results in red hair and red-colored skin.
Red hair is found on people lacking pro-opiomelanocortin.

Is red hair an example of incomplete dominance?

Daphne

This seems very likely. In 1999, a geneticist studied this phenomena very closely. He observed a family where both the mother and the father (P generation) had blond, and four children. The three children inherited the blond hair, except the youngest who inherited the red hair.
This phenomena isn't explained in Mendel's laws of inheritance. He only mentioned that two alleles seperate during gamete formation and t hen combine.
Very strange.

Answer
In this case, blond could be dominant over red, so if the parents were both Bb, there could be a BB, Bb, Bb, and bb offspring, which would result in 3 complete dominance blondes and one totally recessive redhead. If what I remember is true, blond is totally dominant over red in human hair color.

African American Hair Color Help?

cute_ne

I'm a black woman and would like to color my black hair a different color. I was thinking about dying it some type of deep red. I've tried all of the blond colors and I'm tried of them. Please help me with the right color and the right brand.

Answer
Deep reds or copper tones really go well with black skin, especially if it's a lighter kind of black. If it's dark, however, dark browns or hinted deep reds would go nicely because you do not want to look fake.

Is putting a dye in a african american woman hair bad. ?

meek

My hair is Black & I wanna go lighter and I was told since my hair is dark I need to bleach it. So is it bad to dye it or just get a rinse ?

Answer
It depends on how much lighter you want to go, the level of damage to your hair and if you have any other chemicals on your hair (i.e. a relaxer or texturizer). My hair is an off black/dark brown color and I have used Nice and Easy in various red tones for years without problems. Now, if you are talking going blonde, then yes, you will have to use a very strong chemical to lift the black color before depositing the blonde color on it and that is very damaging. I would consult with a reputable salon before doing such a process with an at-home color...
