Red hair, what colour headscarf?

Pip Bart

I have red hair and really want a 100% cotton headscarf. if you don't know what they are, they are the head scarfs the 50's women used to wear etc.
I want a few colours but i don't know which colour to get! I'm very confident kinda like jessi j.
the colours are, black, red, hot pink or yellow.
help!

Answer
black
or even hot pink, believe it or not

you can actually use red too, but it has to be either much lighter or much darker than the shade of your hair to look okay

DO NOT use yellow

Can I carry the gene for red hair?

Adriana

Ok, so my cousin and I have brown hair but we also have very scarce red and blonde hairs in our head. I don't know if anybody in my family has red hair, but I seriously love the hair color and I was wondering if My cousin and I might have the gene. The thing is that I would love to marry a redhead and have children with that hair color. Please don't make fun of me or be rude, I just want to know. Redheads are only born if their parents have the gene, maybe a doctor of something might be able to answer... Thanks. =)

Answer
Sure. Brown is dominant, red is recessive. You can either have two brown genes or brown and any recessive color, which gives you brown hair, but your children can be either of the genes you carry and contribute. Since your hair is brown your odds are 50-50 for passing on the one brown gene you must have to have brown hair. There is no way to know what recessive gene you have if you do not have a 2nd brown gene. You may have SOME hairs that are NOT brown, but those are from mutations that have happened to you after you were born, NOT from your genes. These are exceptions after the fact from the brown gene that gives you the base hair color. I have blue eyes. The only way to HAVE blue eyes is to have two blue genes. Blue is the MOST recessive, the LEAST dominant, and yields to ANY other color of eyes. ALL I can pass on is BLUE. I was married to a woman with blue eyes. As a result all of our children can ONLY have blue eyes since we only had blue genes between us. The same applies to red hair. It takes two red genes to HAVE red hair just as it takes two blue genes to HAVE blue eyes.

Best upkeep strategy for dyed red hair?

Dawn

I love going red but I fade really quickly as my hair is blonde naturally.

What products/tips/dyes do you recommend for me?

Thanks :)

Answer
Red is a great colour although it doesn't matter what natural colour your hair is the reds going to fade. I was red for years and used to have to top it up every 6 weeks just to stop it going that horrid orange colour.

There's very little you can do to stop it fading it's just one of the problems with red. Your best bet is to get a good shampoo and conditioner made specifically for red hair. There are a few shampoo products out there which lightly colour the hair as you wash. Your other option is to look for a wash through semi permanent dye. I used to have one which I bought in a hippy style store in town which looked flame red in the pot but when washed through just added that little extra red boost to my hair when needed. The shampoos and wash in products are going to be better for your hair in the long run then constant permanent dying but I'd use a good conditioner none the less.

Oh also another little tip once you go red getting rid of it is a nightmare and dam near impossible. It took me months of colouring just to get back to brown as it's a colour that breaks through everything and clings on for dear life! I keep thinking it would be great to go red again but I know for a fact my hairdresser would now kill me hehe.

How do I dye hair red?

Rocio

I have naturally dark brown almost black hair. I wanted to dye my hair red so my hair dresser did, and she did a fabulous job. The only thing is my hair won't get a bright red, so the red I have in my hair now is darker, and not clearly red when I'm in dim lighting. Is there anyway I can get that unmistakeably red hair?
I did not bleach my hair, and the red has shown up pretty well, but it's just really the most vibrant in the sun, and not indoors.

Answer
You would most likely have to bleach your hair out before using the red color. It's a job best left to the experts, so I wouldn't try it at home! Reds fade out faster than any other hair color, unfortunately, so the upkeep can be a pain. Once you have the red you want, try using the shampoos and conditioners made for red hair. They work very well, and help to keep your red looking fresh longer.

Red hair what do you think ?

lauren

As a kid i wasrather bullied because my hair was red with natiral highlights of blonde and autumn colours, from the age of 11 i have dyed it black, brown, pink, blue, and now i am currently blonde,my brother and sister find it very difficult too because they have red hair and my younger sister is allways bullied in school.
I have noticed there is not that many people around with natural red hair and i had allways hated the colour until i saw this picture

http://www.shimmersalon.com/elumin2.gif

my hair isnt that colour but my sisters is and i think its a beautiful colour, what does everyone else think ? xx

Answer
I think you should dye your hair that color. It's a beautiful shade. There was actually a study done to see what color hair men across the world prefer. It always seemed to be the exotic color in their culture, the rarest. And guess which color is the rarest of them all? Red! Barely any women in the world have red hair, most are in northern Europe and America.

When men all across Japan, China, Mexico, Brazil, Canada, and America were asked which they preferred:
Japan: blond
China:a tie between blond and black
Mexico: red!
Brazil: blond
Canada: red!
America: red two years in a row now.

Cosmo asked twelve men who chose the red option why, two answers that stuck out to me were:
"I donno, I guess growing up around the little mermaid and Mrs. Roger Rabbit..."
"They're so feisty and fiery headed. You think of a smart, witty girl who's a secret sexy beast in the bed. Not dumb, not timid. I've had the best experiences with a red head."

Is that really what America thinks of red heads? I'd believe it.

Let me go ask my boyfriend what he prefers, "hey hun?" (btw-i'm a brunette)
"Are red heads hot?"
"Hell yes! Why you want to be one? Cause I'm for it."

i need a PERMANENT bright red hair dye.?

hippiechic

Answer
you must bleach your hair first. as white as possible, then apply some red hair dye. But beware of harmful products from China (although not all Chinese hair dye are harmful). It is permanent until you grow those natural hair of yours.

What unnatural color should I dye my hair?

A.R.

I don't want to hear any "just leave it like it is" or "dye it brown" or whatever. I want to dye it an unnatural color like teal, bright red, etc. You can suggest natural colors with an unnatural color though. (Like, "brown and teal" or something.) Here are a couple of photos of me:

(My skin tone is closer to the second picture, like a light olive color.)

Answer
Red, like the red coloured hair Rihanna had. I love that shade, it's really nice.

Should I dye my hair black or red?

genocidewi

My hair is currently a faded red and it's mostly light brown now. I really do like the red, but I don't know if I should do it again. Here's a picture of me: (I'm also getting my hair cut shorter and layered more...)

I also am cutting my bangs and what not and sorry the picture is tiny! To give you an idea of my eyecolor...

Should I color my hair red?

Southern B

I'm thinking about coloring my hair like a Haliey Williams cherry red because I want to color my hair a fun color, but I don't know if I should because I have soft black colored hair and I have an olive skin tone and I have freckles splashed across my nose but people can't really see them in the winter.
I have dark chocolate brown colored eyes.
I meant hayley Williams.

Answer
Red is a really hard color to pull off but if you really want to do it get it done professionally please. There are two types of red hot red(orange-red) and cool red(blue/purple red) and hot red looks like clown hair on people with olive skin tones. All of the colors Hayley has in her hair are hot red colors and would clash terribly with your skin tone, she has pink toned skin so it looks fine on her. Like I said red is a really hard color to get right, so please have a professional do it for you.

Also because you have black hair they'll have to lift quite a bit of color to get your hair close to what she has, they'll probably have to do it over a period of a few days, just keep that in mind. Walk into the salon you choose before you get it done with a picture of Hayley how you like is as ask what the actual colorist thinks would be do able for your hair, the prices, time it would take, how much maintenance and up keep it will take, etc.

Hope this helps.

Why is the red hair such an uncommon hair color?

Cairistion

I'm jealous of anyone who is a redhead lol! I wish I had red hair!

Answer
Red hair is recessive. Basically, if I inherit one gene for "brown hair" and one for "red hair", the gene for "brown hair" will dominate and I will have brown hair. The only way you get red hair is if BOTH genes are "red hair" genes. Now, it is a little more complex than that because there are more than two genes that determine hair colour, but that's the basic idea. It's sometimes called a "defect" but it's not....it's just recessive.

EDIT: Other people have answered with a cultural explanation and that's true too. Red hair originated in the north European area...I can't remember where exactly...maybe with the vikings? Anyway, it was a relatively small group of people, so spreading the "red hair" recessive gene to other cultures without the "red hair" gene at all - would have been really slow.

Red Hair to Blonde??

Jaymie M

I just dyed my hair from red to blonde, but unfortunately some strands didn't take and now I am left with dark red on the top, and lighter red/blonde on the bottom and it looks bad. I have a box of medium blonde hair dye that I can dye my hair with again to even out the lighter strands, but I was wondering what will happen to the red on top? Thanks!
What would happen if I dyed my hair the medium blonde though?

Answer
I recently went from red to blonde too. I noticed that you said dyed. To get an even color through out your hair you need to bleach it first using a number 30 or 40 developer depending on how dark you hair is. Since you already died your hair blonde i would recommend using a number 30. Start by putting the bleach on the darkest parts of your hair and lightest last that way when your hair is processing your darker pieces will have more time to process. Also when applying the bleach make sure to do it quickly so that the hair comes out evenly, I suggest having some one do it for you so that all the hair is covered. While processing keep a plastic bag over your head so the heat doesn't escape. After you finished bleaching die your hair the color blond you'd like. Make sure your hair is wet, the die will take better. As for dieing you hair medium blonde right now the red on the top of your hair might lighten a bit but not very much.

Where can i find pics of red hair on bottom and blonde on top ???

Hair Colour ideas?

Free hug?

think as wild or as...conservative as you want. I want a mix between vibrant and natural colours. my hair has been green, pink, orange, yellow, and blue so far. i'm naturally a redhead so even when its not dyed, its still vibrant looking. so anything natural is good too. i have a mohawk by the way, and though i like vibrant colours, i don't like a million colour combinations, two is good enough for me. oh and i'm thinking along the lines of red or purple....and i've got no clue what natural colour i want. i can't bring myself to think of any limiting colours here...lol

Answer
You could have red, purple & blue.

Like blended, so from red to purple to blue.

I know you said two colors max.

But that'd look pretty wicked.

I used to have what I called "skittle vomit hair" It was red, blue, pink, green, purple, orange & yellow.

it looked awesome but it was to expensive to maintain at the time as I didn't have a job back then.

If i dyed my red hair brown, would the colour come back again?

Caitlin

I have natural red hair, if i dyed it brown, will my natural colour come through again afterwards? ive heard it words differently on that colour

Answer
Of course not, that will only take you longer to get to your natural color.

Celebrity wears two-tone hair dye all the time, trying to grow out their dye. They call that the ombre style.

Style meets chemistry meets biology: We're talking hair coloring.

Playing with chemicals is not like playing with clothes, or doing a manicure, there are penalties for playing chemicals in the lab. Even hair color experts at the salon are not rocket scientists, they do a bang up dye jobs to their clients or their own hair.

Chemicals can enter the body through the skin.
> > > Hair dye chemicals linked to cancer
London, Feb 20, 2013 I've been saying that since 2009.
Hair dyes, which include home hair colouring kits and those used at pricey salons, are linked to deadly cancer-causing chemicals, warn scientists. In 2009 the Mail revealed that women who used hair dyes more than nine times a year had a 60% greater risk of contracting blood cancer.
A year later the European Commission banned 36 hair dyes which put long-term users at risk of bladder cancer. < < < <â¨
Google: Teen 'feared she would die' after reaction to hair dye
The allergic reaction was caused by a well-known brand of semi-permanent hair dye Chloe used to turn her hair black for a Halloweâen party. . . . . called for beauty bosses to ban hair dye chemical PPD (para-phenylenediamine) from the shelves. 11-04-11

The chemical is not new and is present in a number of brands of dark hair colours, acting to help adhere the dye to the hair so that it doesn't wash out. Itâs made from coal tar and is used in both permanent and semi-permanent hair colours. Itâs well-known to be a cause of serious allergic reactions -- including something called contact dermatitis which can lead to rashes, blisters, and open sores.
PPD is sometimes added to black henna tattoos and that using them is not safe. Allergic reactions usually begin within two to 10 days following application. One bad reaction can lead to sensitivities to other products such as hair dye, sunblock and some types of clothing dyes. Oftentimes, it's using the product a second or third time. Skin specialist Najjia Ashraf reveals that there are barely any dyes that donât contain this toxin; even the ones who claim they donât, are not being honest. âBig brands often escape the blame by suggesting they are ammonia-free. However, ammonia and PPD are two very different things and PPD is present in nearly every dye because it is what gives off the colour,â she explains.

Google: A 38-year old mother left in a coma after using hair dye. SHE DYED HER HAIR MANY TIMES BEFORE, USING THE SAME BRAND. The British woman who went into coma after a reaction to hair dye has died after a year. Updated 11-25-12. The woman suffered a heart failure, struggled for breath and became unconsciousness. Her family blamed paraphenylenediamine, a chemical found in hair colour. Her family has now called for paraphenylenediamine to be banned from home dye kits. In 2000, a 38-year-old Indian-origin woman from Birmingham, Narinder Devi, died after an allergic reaction to hair dye.

Permanent black hair dye is linked to causing leukemia and lymphomas.

Again, I know people have opinions about getting it done professionally but I will not. I need suggestions on a brand and color ( I've have red hair for years myself that I do I just have never done it like that)

Answer
Go to Sally's and check out ions reds they are really rich colors! Or if you have dark hair loreal hicolor is awesome for dying your hair red, it gives it a beautiful color and lasts longer than a semi permanent would such as manic panic... Stay away from box dyes!

Would red hair look good on me?!?

Dorothy

I'm thinking about dying my hair red. I want to now if red would look good on me like a Rihanna red but with a little more burgundy in it. Here's are two pictures of me

Btw I've never dyed my hair before it had any treatment in it!! The most I've done is straighten it. Would red look good on me? Or some other color???

How should I dye my hair?

Madison

I have dirty blonde hair, green eyes, and white/ tan skin. I want to dye my hair like Kristen Stewart's hair that brown with red undertones. Or like how acacia Clark's hair is now she posts a lot of pics of it on Instagram. It's like a darkish brown color hard to expain. Or any other color that would look good with my skin and eyes. But I just want to dye it darker for the fall and winter... My hair doesn't really grow fast at all like 1 inch every 4 months. I don't want it semi permrmnat because then it will wash off after 10 uses. And i don't want permrmnat hair dye either because I want my blondness back and I feel if I dye it then have to wait till it grows back I won't have natural blonde hair back because my hairs turning brown. What dye should I use? And can u get your hair dyed at the chain hair places like fantastic sams ect.

Answer
Go to the hair dressers and get it done professionally :D good luck !

Ion color brilliance brights red?

Dylan

I bought Ion color brilliance brights in the color red and it's semi-permanent, and I have dark brown almost black hair and 1/3 of my head is bleached from 1 1/2 year ago and so I was wondering how bright would the dye look on my black hair and how bright would it be on my bleached hair?

Answer
Ion brights red is fabulous! It's nice and concentrated, and the color generally comes out bright. I've dyed the red on both blonde and orange hair and they both looked the same... BRIGHT red, as the name suggests:) it should be bright red on your bleached hair. I'm not sure about the black hair though

red hair color question?

courtneyfa

Does Ion Color Brilliance Brights in Red need a developer? Also, can I use the Ion Red Intensifier with that color on my hair to achieve a very red hot color. My hair is currently a colored red, but it is not intensely bright. All advice welcome. Best answer will be awarded!

Answer
Try bright red henna. A natural dye is better for your hair. Just add an acidic liquid to mix it up with and follow directions. It stays on longer than synthetic dyes.

Can I dye my hair red over my dark brown dyed hair?

Caaaaitlin

I dyed my hair dark brown 2 months ago and my blonde roots are coming in now and my hair has lightened into a lighter shade of dark brown. I also cut it as well. I was wondering if I can dye my hair red over my recently dyed brown hair and if it will also come out?

thanks!

Answer
All hair coloring tends to fade (even the permanent dyes). You can put the red over your dyed color. Just be warned that it may not look exactly like it does on the box. You also need to know that your roots will be lighter than the rest.

I want to dye my hair red?

Andrea

Hi, I want to dye my hair a vibrant burgundy, maybe even red like in this http://www.wkgc.org/local/images/JossStone1.jpg picture. It is currently dark brown. Am I going to have to lighten it beforehand? I have dyed my hair a lot in the past but never lightened it with product before dyeing it.

Thanks.

Answer
If your hair is real dark brown, then yes, you probably would want to.
I have dark brown hair too, and I got it dyed red / Burgundy, and yes, they had to bleach my hair beforehand.
But then again, I only got it in some places, (bangs and some highlights) not the whole head.
If your hair is dark you would probably definitely want to lighten it a bit if you want the colour to really show.

Has anyone used Revlon hair color, specifically #50 light ash brown?

wayshower

I have naturally black hair, and have been dying my hair for years now, so I actually have a reddish brown, and at times coppery look to my hair, it is also very long and curly. Now my roots are coming in black, plus some gray, and I am tired of this coppery or reddish brown, it just does not look right. I'm looking for a more chocolate brown, or Penelope Cruz brown, but I don't want my hair to come out too dark. I bought #50 Light Ash Brown simply because I always made the mistake in the past of getting a color that was too dark. I'm hoping this color will take away the red I already have. I also have olive skin. Any advice would be helpful! Thanks!

Answer
Yes I have used it before and my hair has the same condition as you. I have black hair and after years and years of hair dyeing, it is now coppery color. The brown color comes out good, not too dark. I love it, it looks very natural.

If I bleach my hair will it ever go back to it's natural color?

Ariel Hort

It might sound dumb but my friend bleached hers and her natural color is a lot darker now when it grows in, I love my natural color but I want to dye my hair cherry red and to do that I'm gonna have to bleach it. Would I ever be able to get it back to where it is now?

Answer
No. But you've got 50/50 chance. I used to do that. My orig. hair color was blue-black, now I have 4 due to aging gracefully.

Call the 1-800# found on the box of dye or email them, (to find #, go online & search the brand if you don't have the box) they're the hair color experts they can advice you best.

Playing with chemicals is not like playing with clothes, or doing a manicure, there are penalties for playing chemicals in the lab. Even hair color experts at the salon are not rocket scientists, they do a bang up dye jobs to their clients or their own hair.
Example: "My hair is right about armpit length as it is, but I've severely damaged it by bleaching it all at once. As a student of cosmetology myself, I would have to say that it was probably one of the worst mistakes I could have ever made."
Another example: ok i did my hair yesterday i DIDN'T bleach it ,but im not sure what its called but she took the color out of my hair and then dies it a blond color and my head was on fire it killed me so after that i hated my hair color so i colored it my self a darker color, it looked so ugly and it burned me again it rully hrt so after i washed it my mom checked it for me and found small spots of blood all over my top scalp like over 20 of em now im scared and don't know why its there is it from the color am i sick and something is wrong ??

ombre hair, previously dyed red?

britt

I want to try the ombre hair look but have never used bleach before. my hair is naturally medium brown but i dyed it red this winter and its spring now. Im wondering what the bleach will turn my hair since its red but fading, its still noticeably red though. and where can i buy bleach

Answer
If you've recently dyed your hair red, the bleach won't be completely blonde. It may have this brassy orange-ish color to it. Be sure you use toner.

Ombre-ing naturally red hair?

red

My hair is naturally a dark-ish auburn red color and is down to my lower back. I really want to do an ombre hairstyle [not with a blonde but with a lighter red-orange color so it's not so... BAM], and I plan on doing it myself because I'm a broke college student. I have never dyed my hair [unless you count using my sisters leftover black hair-dye to do a super sweet random streak in the 7th grade... I like to NOT think about it.] I have seen a lot of tutorials and it looks like a really easy process, but pretty much all of them were going from brown to blonde, and my hair is a little different, so I have a few questions:

1. Do I need to use bleach on my hair to get it lighter?
2. Is there a technique you have used that did or did not work well for you?
3. Is this a stupid idea?

My hair looks a lot like this [length and color wise...minus the ombre part], but once I get the ombre part done, I want it to look exactly like this:

http://weheartit.com/entry/28184078

Thank you Pinterest.com

Answer
That's so weird you asked this question! I just looked up ways to bleach your hair at home, and I think I may have the answer for you. Well, since your hair is red and you want it to be orange, if you fill a spray bottle a little bit with hydrogen peroxide, then spray it on the parts you want to be ombre-ed then leave it in for a while, then rinse it out, you shold get noticeably lighter hair. I have black hair and I bleached a section of my hair with this, and it turned it lighter in about 30 minutes. So I think that would make a great ombre look. You can make it as light as you want, and if you don't like it you could just re-dye your hair it's nautral color. I hope that's what you wanted! :D

Best way to maintain red hair color?

Meggles650

I've been dyeing my hair red for years now. I'm naturally blonde. Realllly thin hair. Can't find anything to help it from fading. Right now, most of my hair is vibrant red, some of it is blonde. (You can see it in my thumbnail) I've used Loreal Colorist Professional(?) in Clover red. It worked alright, but I don't know if it will stain the platinum blonde part in my hair. Also, when my color fades, my roots don't fade, but my ends fade really quickly. Last time I got my hair dyed like this it only lasted 2-3 weeks. I heard that keratin helps too, so I've been using Chi's Keratin Mist. Any other suggestions??

Answer
Red is always going to be a hard color to maintain. The reason why it fades at the ends is due to the porosity and dead ends. Also, to help is using a color enhancer shampoo with a low pH around 3.5-4.5 this helps to keep the cuticle shaft closed. Another is washing your hair too much, using heating appliances and not using a heat protectant, the sun also oxidizes hair color.
No matter what brand you use the red is going to fade. Next time you go to a beauty supply store like sally's buy a protein filler in red and you can apply it to your hair and wash it out, or put some in the color as well, either way it's going to even out the porosity to give you and even color. Just put the color in a bowl and then the protein red filler and mix first then mix the peroxide. I also buy a demi permanent and use in between color applications. Demi permanents are low in ammonia , deposit color only, and make you hair very shiny, and last between 6-8 weeks. This is optional and found that it does work good and is less damaging.
hope this helps and i love your red color it's very pretty for you skin tone :)

Why is my red hair colour washing out?

Lili Eryri

I had my hair coloured last week in a salon to a deep red colour. It involved stripping the ends of my hair with bleach because there was a lot of colour build up from previous home dye kits.
The end results was fab, but now after washing a few times, the ends have faded to light brown (where they stripped) whilst the roots are still red. Ok, I know red fades, but this fast?? And why not the roots?!
The water after washing my hair is bright red aswell. I payed £110 for this colour, so it shouldn't be fading already!
Have they done something wrong or is red meant to fade within a week?

Answer
Red is the fastest fading hair colors. The reason that your hair is changing color is because the chemicals in the red dye don't hold as much as the colors in brown or blond dyes. The dye is holding better at your roots because that is the newest hair growth and thus, the least damaged. The bleached or stripped sections of your hair are much more damaged. Bleach does a number on hair and usually reds will fade more quickly on bleached sections than anywhere else. I'm not surprised that your hair has faded that quickly, red is so fickle! If you want to keep your red at it's best you should buy some shampoos and conditioners with a "glaze" of red or ones that are specially formulated for dyed red hair.

Colors to dye red hair?

I have naturally darkish red hair. As of right now it almost looks blonde because of all of my highlights. I have no freckles on my face, brown eyes and brown eyebrows and eyelashes. Fair skin, not completely pale. My hair stops just above my shoulders, shorter in the front longer in the back.I'm a weird looking red head. And I want to dye my hair for the summer! I would like to stay in the red range. Any suggestions? I am open to ALL ideas(:.

Are red hair, green eyes and freckles related ?

.

i have green eyes and freckles but not red hair
i've heard that they are caused by a thing called pheomelanin

Answer
Melanin exists in two forms in human skin and hair: eumelanin, which is a brown-black color and phomelanin, which is a yellow-red color. The relative ratio controls hair/skin color. People who donât have red hair convert most of their phomelanin to eumelanin. No phomelanin left means no red coloration left in the hair.
Since every person inherit two copies of a gene you may have a dominant version and a recessive. A possible indicator of the red recessive gene's presence can be freckles. However people can have freckles who do not carry the recessive for red hair due to other genetic skin influences.

Green eye color is due to EYCL2 or eye color 2 gene. The dominant form encodes green eyes and the recessive encodes blue. This gene is recessive to EYCL1 that produces brown or blue. Both genes together regulate the amount of melanin present in the iris. More melanin means darker eye color. Your EYCL1 must be for blue (meaning less melanin) for you to have green eyes.

Eye color genetics
http://www.thetech.org/genetics/ask.php?id=203
http://www.hhmi.org/cgi-bin/askascientist/highlight.pl?kw=&file=answers%2Fgenetics%2Fans_044.html

The critical gene involved in the conversion of melanin in skin and hair is MC1R. This gene encodes for a protein that ensures the phomelanin is converted.
Red haired people have less of the MC1R protein because they inherit copies that are not translated into protein very frequently if at all. There are actually has 7-9 known levels of MC1R production to account for different amounts of redness being left in hair.

It may seem odd that a gene is translated to protein at different rates in different people but this is the kind of variation that is meant when you hear things about genetic variability in a species. It isn't just an 'on' or 'off' switch. There can be a broad range of expression in some genes where one person expresses more than another as an inherited trait. The gene itself encodes for the same protein but the rate the protein is made is varied between people.

Red Hair genetics Question?

gwynn

So I have medium/dark brown hair. I have 2 sisters who are red hair, fair skinned. We have the same parents, my mom was blonde and my dad strawberry blonde. How did I get such dark hair?

Answer
The genetics behind red hair inheritance is a little different than the inheritance of other traits. With red hair a person can inherit the trait even if both parents do not exhibit the trait which is not entirely true in your case because your dad has strawberry blonde hair which is a variation of red headedness. Inheriting red hair is controlled by the melanocortin-1 receptor (MC1R) gene. Which essentially regulates the amounts of melanin in the body. This is why consequentially people with red hair tend to also have fair skin, freckles and a variety of other pigment related traits characteristic of people of irish, scandinavian or higher latitude populations and their decedents. In people with this gene they tend to have more of the pigment pheomelanin than do people with other hair colors who tend to have more eumelanin instead. Both of your parents are likely to be carriers of the MC1R gene but do not have read hair because the necessary mutations that need to occur on the chromosome haven't occurred. Since your mom is blonde it is most likely that you inherited your dark hair from your dad. A number of genes determine hair color and chances are you are a carrier of the gene for red hair as well.

thanks!

Answer
Go for it girl!
I think it would look great on you!
I'm actually halfway through dying my hair black and red at the moment. I generally have black hair, with a lot of crazy, bright colours these days, and everyone seems to like it. I love it personally. It's creative and original. I'm going for only two at the moment, because I want it to be red and black over Halloween. Before I put the black dye in tonight it was black, bright pale purple, brown, bright pink, bright orange-pink, bright fluoro green, bright pale blue and purple. I've done red and black before, but it'll be all over the place this time =)
You should go for it. do all your tips... if you're game, put some in your fringe. You're beautiful, it'll look great.

Oh, but one thing to keep in mind: your hair is part of your outfit, so when going for colourful hair, it's important to remember that if you care about colour-coding, that when you have obvious red in your hair, you can't wear anything with pink anymore, and if you have pink, you can't wear red.
With my last hair, a whole huge section of my wardrobe that was black and red went into storage, because I refuse to mix pink and black. It get's to come back now...but no more pink tartan miniskirt! Your choice though =).

Asian attitudes towards red hair?

KB

I am going to have the opportunity soon to travel across Asia but there's something that has been puzzling me.

I'm of Irish stock and possessed of long red hair that I generally keep tied back in a ponytail. I've been told in China, I can expect a fairly negative reaction, that red hair is seen as ugly. I've also been told the opposite, that it's seen as new and exciting. I've been told that in Japan, nobody will really care, Thailand I'll probably draw sideways glances but nothing major. The one common theme though seems to be that, whatever reaction I get, it will be extreme because of my hair color.

The trip is going to go through Japan, China, Thailand, Vietnam, and South Korea. I will be going through the cities as well as urban areas.

So, basically, what can an outsider (American) with long red hair expect when traveling through these countries?

Answer
well, people will be curious about it but aside from that they don't care. asian people don't really care much about how others look or about other people's business, they just keep their opinions to themselves and mind their own business. you might get some fanfare from Thai or Viet girls because of your different and radiant hair colour. no red hair's not ugly

How can I pull off red hair?

Q. I'm Cuban, but from Spaniard descent. Therefore I look white, but you can tell there's some sort of different ethnicity in me. I've been DYING to pull off a dark red hair color. I have naturally dark brown hair, and brownish/reddish eyes. In my hair I've bleached the underneath a pale blonde, and there are accents of pale blonde here and there. I want to keep the blonde and exchange the brown for red. But how can I pull this off exactly? I have super long hair, usually I flip my bangs back but when I put the red in I'm going to get choppy layers, keeping the length, and having razor edge bangs that cover my forehead. It's hard to explain but yeah. OPINIONS!

Answer
do it! i have dark red hair, its rad, but hard to keep up with!
your skin color and eyes would be totally bitchin with the red, and with the super long would make it more gypsy like, lovE!

Can red hair suit tan skin?

Leo Lion

So I'm naturally quite tan, and I've been wanting to dye my hair red for a while. By red I mean a sort of copper red hair like this:

http://www.
newhairstyletrends.
com/2011/02/
red-hair-color-options/
copper-red-hairstyle/

but as you may notice, she is really pale and it really suits her like this.

But I'm tan, not by ethnicity but my skin acts to the sun really easily (doesn't burn though), and I'm not sure it will look good...

What do you guys say?

Does that colour work, or would a different colour red be more suitable?

Answer
A different shade of red would be more suitable as you are right skin tone does compliment hair colour and it would be advisable to look for shades of red that look natural and compliment your skin tone. It is not that red hair colour is out of the question it is a matter of shades.

What color should my eyebrows be if I have red hair?

Paranormal

I'm thinking about dyeing my hair a dark red. Probably something like this:

http://www.primped.com.au/images/uploads/primped_loves/ghd/IMG_4385_Detail.jpg

or maybe even really bright like this:
http://fc00.deviantart.com/fs21/i/2007/234/c/e/hair_by_encreblanc.jpg

But I pluck my eyebrows very thin and pencil them. What pencil color should I use? I'm afraid if I use red it will look like I have lipstick eyebrows.
I don't have eyebrows to dye. I pluck them out because they've always grown funny - since I was 13 I've penciled them.

Answer
I would just get your eyebrows died also. plucking them and then just coloring them, expecally with red wouldnt look good.

Can I dye my eyebrows same as my hair color like mahogany or red brown?

ozixa

some of hair salons here laughed at me and said its abnormal to dye eyebrows brown red or mahogany and it would look like unusual but what I dont understand dying hair in Mahogany or red brown ain't natural hair colours!

Answer
No, usually eyebrows aren't really supposed to be dyed in "unnatural" colours...usually, people just use eyebrow-pencils to alter the colour of their eyebrows. I suggest doing your eyebrows using a dark-brown eyebrow pencil when your hair is mahogany & just a light-brown/chestnut/burgungy colour when your hair is red...that's the closest you can get to have matching eyebrows that look both natural & pretty...^^ I guess you shouldn't worry about dying them...when there are easier alternatives like make-up !!!

Hopefully this helped you... :)
Don't forget that usually eyebrows are a shade lighter than your hair colour.. :)

How do I get bright red hair from dark brown hair?

Jenny

My hair is dark brown, very long and straight, it's not very thin like blonde hair, but it's also not very thick, it's just medium I guess :P

I don't have enough money to do it at the hairdressers, even the cheapest hairdressers still want a lot of money for bleaching and dying, so I have to do it myself.

So, how do I turn my dark brown hair bright right? :)

My current hair is close to this colour:
http://www.stylishhairstyles.net/women-hairstyles/dark-brown-hair-for-new-trends-2011-1.jpg

And I want it to be this colour:
http://i47.tinypic.com/2w54w0p.png

Thankyou so much for any help! :-)

P.S. I'm willing to and expecting to bleach my hair :P

Answer
You don't have to bleach your hair :D
You can buy
"Loreal HiColor Highlights in Magenta or Red."
I suggest red for the color you desire (:
It's for dark hair only and all you need is a bowl and some volume developer.
You mix the developer with the dye and there you go! C:
The color comes out beautiful (:
You can buy it at Sally's Beauty.

the first shade of red is my favourite and the colour which i've been wanting for a while. the only problem with it is, im not sure whether it would suit you too well.
you have lovely straight hair (if its naturally like that). it would look better if you got some layers in there, keeping the length, and a side fringe. you could also tease it to give it some volume, as it looks quit flat in the second photo.

good luck :3

Is red hair a mutation that can happen to anyone who is Caucasian or mixed or does it have a specific origin?

Dogggg

Answer
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_hair
red hair (also referred to as titian or ginger hair) varies from a deep burgundy through burnt orange to bright copper. It is characterized by high levels of the reddish pigment pheomelanin and relatively low levels of the dark pigment eumelanin. Approximately 1% to 2% of the human population has red hair. It occurs more frequently (between 2% and 6% of the population) in northern and western Europeans, and their descendants, and at lower frequencies throughout other parts of the world. Red hair appears in people with two copies of a recessive gene on chromosome 16 which causes a mutation in the MC1R protein. It is associated with fair skin color, lighter eye colors (gray, blue, green, and hazel), freckles, and sensitivity to ultraviolet light.
ORIGINS
Red hair is the rarest natural hair color in humans. The pale skin associated with red hair may have been advantageous in far-northern climates where sunlight is scarce. Studies by Bodmer and Cavalli-Sforza (1976) hypothesized that lighter skin pigmentation prevents rickets in colder latitudes by encouraging higher levels of Vitamin D production and also allows the individual to retain heat better than someone with darker skin. Estimates on the original occurrence of the currently active gene for red hair vary from 20,000 to 100,000 years ago. Red hair is caused by a relatively rare recessive gene, the expression of which can skip generations

Less than four percent of the world population has naturally red hair. That is less than two percent in America. The gene for Ginger hair was discovered in 1995 and this discovery got little attention. This is not consistent as red heads have gotten lots of it. Professor Jonathan Rees conducted a study of redheads at Edinburgh University. He identified the"gene for red hair" the melanocortin 1 receptor (MC1R), found on the 16th chromosome. He found that this single gene was responsible for red hair.
Red hair is a genetic mutation, and is seen on the heads of only four percent of people. Most of these exist in the U.K., the Republic of Ireland, and Australia. The highest percentage of natural redheads in the world is in Scotland (13%), followed closely by Ireland with 10%. In the US, about 2% of the population are natural redheads.
Red headedness is, genetically speaking, a recessive trait. It may appear after several generations of darker hair. Redheads do NOT turn grey. Red hair turned sandy, then white. They are also found to loose their color later in life than people carrying other hair colors.
The first human redheads walked this earth about 50,000 years ago in Africa and then spread throughout Northern Europe. The country name of Russia means "land of reds" in honor of a redheaded Viking by the name of Rurik.
The first redheaded British monarch was a woman. Boudicca was a Celtic warrior was led her people, the Icenti, against the Romans in the C.E. 60âs.
Belief that redheads are witches is a folk belief in Germanic culture. From 1483-1784 thousands of suspected witches were nearly always stripped and searched for âmarks of the devilâ. These included any âabnormalityâ such as freckles, moles, warts, and birthmarks. Red hair was certainly considered an abnormality. Considering the freckle factor for redheads this was a deadly and shocking horror. Somewhere around 45,000 women were tortured and murdered usually by burning at the stake or by drowning.

Genetics of Red Hair
Part of the allure of red tresses is its rarity: red is found in less than 4 percent of natural hair colors throughout the world. The majority of redheads are concentrated along the edges of both eastern and western Europe, most notably in Scotland, England, and Ireland; countries that have become easily associated with flowing auburn and ginger tresses. In the United States, less than 2 percent of individuals have naturally red shades of hair. The exclusivity of red is due to its genetic makeup: the red chromosome for hair color is a recessive gene, meaning that an individual must inherit the gene from both parents in order to have red locks of any shade.
Redheads have other genetic traits related to their hair color. Red is found predominantly on individuals with very fair skin who are typically more sensitive to ultraviolet radiation, meaning they sunburn easily, and their hair may also need additional radiation protectants. Each individual red strand is thicker than its blonde, black, or brunette counterparts, but redheads typically have up to 30 percent fewer strands on their heads, making hair loss and thinning a potential concern.

Multi-Colored Eyes: What Causes This?

Ese

To start off: No, I'm not talking about one eye being green and the other blue.

I'm talking about multiple colors within the same eye.

For instance, I usually write down my eye color as Hazel. However, throughout my life it has varied between mostly hazel, grey, bluish, and now it's kind of a green shade.

Look carefully in the mirror, and I can usually see bits of each of those colors scattered in the veiny pattern of the iris. My sisters were the first to point it out to me when I was younger, meaning it's somewhat noticeable to someone looking.

And I'm glad. I think it's really cool, and it gives girls a reason to gaze into my eyes. And i'm liking it now, because I love green eyes.

So what genetically would cause this? I thought it was usually pass/fail in terms of eye color genetics, but it appears multiple traits are showing up, and I thought Green was recessive. Any thoughts?
Here's an Example. Like this, but more saturated.

Answer
Genetics is not black and white. In required science class they teach you the basics. Which is usually dominant and recessive genes etc...

Coloring is determined by the MC1R protein on chromosome 4. Eumelanin is the chemical pigment that creates black and brown in our hair and skin, phaeomelanin creates red and yellow. Hair, skin and eye color are interconnected. Chromosome 16 also plays a part in determining coloring. So....your eyes are their color due to proteins in your chromosomes. You received a certain combination of certain protiens that make your eye color from your parents.

As for your eyes changing color it happens to a lot of people. I think it has to do with certain protiens losing dominaince and other reasons I really don't know. Kinda like how hair grays.

highlighting auburn/red hair?

raethrop

i have naturally red/auburn hair. i've been thinking about getting it highlighted but i don't know if i should. i'd be worried that it could ruin the color of my hair. i mean, i had a chance of getting a huge role in a play and because i wouldn't dye my hair black, i didn't get the part....

but, i've heard highlights/lowlights aren't like that. so i'm not sure if i should just go for it or see if someone with a similar hair color has done it and would recommend not gettind it done.

also, i have no idea what color to get! i heard blonde looks nice, but i don't want my hair to look too light (like strawberry blonde). what color would you guys suggest? do you have any pictures you could share?

Answer
I once had red/auburn hair (naturally blonde) and put blonde highlights in. It looked awesome. I got a lot of compliments on it. It didn't ruin my hair. Red was just a hard color for me to keep, faded easily. Just go light on the highlights and go to a salon to have it done, that's all. You'll love it.

HAIR RED highlights or lowlights or tint - SHARON OSBOURNE?

bubbe2005

Okay, so I have never been to a hair salon before to have my hair colored.

Basically I am filipina with naturally Black hair.
I have been coloring my hair for years, I want to have sharon osbournes red hair!!!!

my length is just past my bra strap.

What is the difference if I had RED tint as opposed to RED highlights?!?!?

My goal is to have sharon osbournes RED HAIR!!

Please can someone help me, perhaps a hair stylist or one that works in a salon?

Also what are lowlights?

so I don't look like an idiot, please can someone explain to me having RED TINT, RED HIGHLIGHTS and RED LOWLIGHTS please?

thank you!!!!

hmm so can anyone suggest to me then please.
I want two tone red.
base color dark red.
highlights lighter red than base colour.

what would be the process, I would have to have tinting done first and then highlights later on?

I'm thinking too much chemicals in my think long hair that I do not want to lose, I'm already losing hair by coming!!

Answer
ok low lights are any colour darker than your natural colour and high light being the opposite.

sharron has a natural mid/dark brown with megenta red LOW lights. (full head foils)

a tint is an all over colour which i never advise anyone to have as the up keep is a nightmare. also dont let them bleach your hair before the high lights as this will make them fade quicker.

red - tint, high/low lights - do tend to fade so use a colour shampoo and conditioner

Would Red Henna Hair Dye Have Any Effect With My Hair Colour?

Onew Worl

Hello!
So I was wondering if adding red henna to my hair would make much of a difference.
My hair colour is pretty close to this
http://3.bp.blogspot.com/__wgTdCCrfeY/TKZwtUkdh4I/AAAAAAAAGcc/2YNbJDmIoBo/s1600/Clairol+Perfect+10.jpg
and I was wondering what I'm supposed to mix, and why people add things such as pomegranate juice into it.
I wanted to go for a oxblood hair colour, but apparently that's hard to achieve if you hair colour isn't very bright on it's own.
Thank you!
I forgot to add that in the light it looks light brown

Answer
My hair is naturally that colour too. Henna will tint your hair red, I have done five or so henna applications in the past two or three years and now my hair is very red in the light, but still dark. I love the colour sort of like this http://pinterest.com/pin/402579654160203626/ but red rather than purple.

Looking for a dark red hair dye (pictures)?

Sierra

I'm looking for a box hair dye to get this color red: http://pinterest.com/pin/91972017360360238/
My hair is really dark brown/faded black

Answer
You'd have to get it professionally done if you want it to be that color. It's a mix of sorta purple and red. It pretty cheap and you'll get that hair color.
But you could always try a red hair dye for dark hair but it will more than likely turn more red than you want
