And what changed for most people in Germany after 1933?

For most people things actually appeared to get better , Germans do like Order , and the Nazi regime brought that after the hyper-inflation of the 20s and the political instability and near-revolutions , and then the unemployment of the 1930s great world depression .
The nazis started a huge programme of public works , and this , as it always does , created a degree of prosperity .
They also had many social programmes , such as the " Winterhilfe " where people were encouraged to donate for helping the poorest members of society .
The streets of most towns where often bright with the red swastika banners , and there was generally a " Feel-good " air about , people had purpose again and felt that there was a new and good spirit about .
Oh sure , a few Communists and ne'er-do-wells vanished ( taken in secret under the " Night and Fog " ( nacht und nebel ) system ) but these tended to be socially isolated individuals anyway .
And later on some Jewish owned businesses had their windows broken and / or daubed with unpleasant graffitti , but of course that was only done by some of the bully-boy yobs of the S A , not by the ordinary decent people like we are .
Later on that nicely dressed quiet dark haired girl would not be at school anymore , but you had other friends , and anyway you knew her parents were bad people because your teacher had explained that to you . And soon it would be summer , your brothers were all off to cycle down to Bavaria and camp in the hills with the Hitler Jugend and you were going on a cruise on the Kraft durch Freude ship with your schoolmates , actually going abroad !
Where your father worked , his foreman in the factory had one of the new Volkswagen cars , so neat and modern and stylish , and maybe in five years or so we might have one too .
Your mum was happy too , adding something new to the house every month , and she would tell you how nice it was now with something to eat at every meal , not just potatoes for soup 4 or 5 days a week with greens from the hedgerows , and there was meat on the table 2 or 3 times a week now too , and cake at the weekend , and bread and milk every day .
And so it went on . The Austrians ( germans really , just like you ) joined the Reich , and then the poor oppressed Germans who were living in the borderlands of Bohemia , now dominated by a lot of harsh Slavs who had been given their wretched and artificial " Country " of Czechoslovakia by the cruel victors of the First World War , were also united into the Reich .
Our Leader would now free the poor german citizens of Danzig , kept in a so-called Free city under the league of nations . And rearrange things with those arrogant Poles who were so rude to us when we went on the train to visit Mums realtions in East Prussia , and had to cross that strip of Germany that the English and French had given to the Poles , and that now seperated Germany from East Prussia .
And so on it went .
The wicked things that were done were done out of sight and the general consciousness of them was minimal . Meanwhile nearly everything was inexpressibly better than the nightmare everybody had just been through .
