Why did short hair used to be so popular?

Brittany

I've noticed that pre-1920s, all women seemed to have longer hair from those old photographs and then from the 1920-late 60s, all women had really short hair or bob and then long hair was popular until the mid 70s and most women had really short hair again and same with the 80s, women had really short hair and then by the late 80s it changed and by the 90s, every girl had long hair just like today and short hair never came back. In older yearbooks that I've seen, the majority of girls had short hair in those times but now every girl has long hair and if you don't have long hair then everyone will call you a lesbian. What changed and why does society look down on women with short hair now?

Answer
If you've watched Downton Abby on PBS, a miniseries, they HAVE LONG HAIR. They put their hair up using bobby pins, and if you've watched that show, they go to bed in ponytails or braids NEATLY, even if the casts have short hair, they use hair extensions to make them look like THEY'RE LONG.

Many of the photos when my mom was a teenager, have shoulder length wavy hair, they are bobby pin set or permed in those days, just as she started perming my hair in the middle 50's.

Hairstyles changes, the 70's the beginning of the HIPPIES FREEDOM REBEL and a new breed of generation . . . started to grow their hair WILD and jeans on girls. Even though many of us wore panty hose, skirts & dresses, it was more in the 80's where people let their hair grow WILDER. I'll take that back . . it was the BEATLES from UK, who shocked the world with their LONG HAIR styles!

Short hair is coming back, because their hair had been damaged: Rihanna, Andrea Grande, Jennifer Aniston, January Jones all examples what happened to their hair.

Google: January Jones: "My Hair Is Falling Out In Clumps" 1-28-13 To quote Joni Mitchell, "you don't know what you got till your thick hair is gone."

"23 years old Rihanna is well known for changing her hairstyle and hair colour on a regular basis and it looks as though all those treatments have finally begun to take their toll on her mane and perhaps her common sense." US Showbiz 2-18-12 Rihanna has reportedly paid $23,500 for an emergency haircut after hers was ruined in a sauna, to fly out hair stylist from L.A. to London..The Province 3-1-12. She wore a long haired blonde wig during the Grammy 2-10-13.

Ariana Grande Opens up: "More Fake Hair than every drag queen on earth." The 20-year-old explained that she essentially destroyed her natural hair, when she had to bleach and dye it red "every other week" on the Nickelodeon show "Sam & Cat." She currently wear wigs now!

Google: Jennifer Aniston's Hair Disaster Nov. 6-13.
The reason Jen went for the ol' snip-a-roo wasn't to be on trend. It's because her hair is fried and falling out after getting a Brazilian Blowout. You know those amazing salon hair treatments that can make the thickest, frizziest hair Pantene commercial-esque? She didn't come to me for advice, I could have said "NO don't!"
It's been all over the news, but why wasn't her hairstylist informed her, they're partners in the new hair product, on which she is a spokesperson! Now embarrassing! Now, she's wearing hair extensions!

Short hair had become more popular in the 90's or later, also because women went back to work, living single with kids to support, they have less & less time for pampering and it's easier to take care of them, plus kids, house work, work outside the home, etc. When they want a makeover, short hair is the way to go! It takes 20 years of bad hair days, for women to figure out what to do with their hair, and it takes 20 years of trying to fix it, using various hair products that can do more harm than good. It is part of a billion dollar business.

If you look @ the wives of King Henry's 6 wives THEY ALL HAVE HAIR DOWN TO THEIR FEET and they were all black hair.

How many inches does your hair grow in a year?

Q. my hair is way past my shoulders and im jw how long it will be in a year?

Answer
Hair is actually dead material when it leaves it's root - otherwise it would hurt very much when your hairdresser works with his scissor. Most people know that, but do you know about these facts:

A blonde head of hair has usually much more strands than red or dark haired heads.
Hair consists mainly of keratin, which is also responsible for the elasticity of fingernails.
A single hair has a thickness of 0.02 - 0.04mm, so that 20 - 50 hair strands next to each other make one millimeter.
Hair is strong as a wire of iron. It rips after applying a force equivalent to 60kg, only after it stretched itself for about 70%.
Even on a good hair day, everyone loses at least 40 to 100 strands.
The average scalp has 100,000 strands, or just fewer than 1000 per square inch.
We are born with all our hair follicles. Some are programmed to grow pigmented hair (as on our scalp) up to 3 feet in length.
In America in '96, 38 million men and 19 million women experience common hair loss determined by heredity.
The trait for baldness can be passed down through paternal or maternal genes.
Hormone imbalance and crash dieting can trigger temporary hair loss.
Hair biology

The root of a hair strand sticks in a bag in the skin. The strand is pushed out of this bag about 0.35mm per day, making an average growth rate of 1cm, or half of an inch, per month. The growth rate is however very much related to the individual person, his age, his diet etc.
Healthy hair has an average lifetime of 2-6 years. After a rest period of three months the single hair falls out, and a new strand starts to grow out of the bag. The lifetime depends on circumstances and person, too.
The lifetime of hair is responsible for the maximum of hair length you can have. Waist length hair takes about 6 years to grow out from a short hair cut, periodic trims included. If your hair has a life cycle of 2 years, you will never achieve a nice waist length mane.
