level 3 red hair color image
Lol
My hair is currently at a level 3 which is just a plain dark brown.
I'm trying to just tint it so that it's a red violet brown (thats the name of the color), and the level is 3rv.
so it's the same level, but just a tint.
should I use a 20 or a 30 volume developer?
Answer
10 volume at the roots (about an inch) and 20 volume for the mid lengths and ends. you need the 10 volume at the root to avoid hot roots (where the roots go lighter and redder than the lengths).

My friend has ethnic level 4 brown hair and wants to be a red violet color?
shelley
my friend recently got her hair colored to a level 4 brown a couple weeks ago and now wants me to color it a red violet. and she also has ethnic biracial hair. and it would be too bad to put bleach on her hair to lighten it. so could i put a level 3 or 4 red violet over her previously colored level 4 brown hair? since it would be too harsh to use bleach on her type of hair to lighten it? i just recently graduated cosmetology school and i need some help with what i should do to achieve a red violet color on her hair. please(:
Answer
If she wants a really dark brown color with red-violet hue (like in the sun) then you can just deposit red-violet over her current hair. If she wants a brighter red-violet, then you as the stylist must do your best to figure out what level the red-violet color is she desires. I'm sure you have done this, but have her show you at least 2-3 pictures of the color she wants. Use those to help you find what level it is. If it is only 1-3 levels lighter than where she is at...Then, you can lighten her hair with a mixture of bleach powder, shampoo and a little bit of developer (20 or 30, you decide depending what you need), apply and cover. Leave on for up to 15 minutes, but watch closely so you don't over bleach it. Repeat that as necessary to achieve the lightness level. Then you can deposit color over. I would use a Semi since its not as damaging. You will have to refresh it for her quicker but it won't be as harmful to her hair and it will be easier for you to play around without the total commitment of the permanent color.
Make sure she uses quality shampoo and conditioner, a leave-in and a deep conditioner every week until she has healthy hair again, then she can do the deep cond treatment 1-2 times a month.
Good luck! I'd like to know how it goes!
