There is a red fuzz ball on my filter. It has a red center with white hairs on it? I have 2 white mollies and 4 tetras, and an apple snail. Is it algae or fungus and should it be removed?

Answer
The white hairs are a fungus. The red center could be snail eggs, food, or something that ended up in the tank by accident. It does need to be removed. It doesn't necessarily mean that you aren't changing your water enough but it never hurts to check your water parameters. If you don't have a test kit then many fish stores will check your water for you if you take them a sample.

Whats the best kinda algae for a saltwater tank?

Also what kind algae should I watch out for, that might cause any problems and how do I get rid of bad algae?

Answer
I wouldn't say there's a "best" per say. You're probably going to get some coralline algae if you use live rock - this is the pink, red, purple, and green crust that forms on the rock and just about any other surface in your tank in time. There are others you can buy such as Gracillaris (Ogo), sea lettuce (Ulva), and Chaetomorpha that help to remove nutrients from the water and can serve as food for some fish and inverts. There's also Caulerpa, but this is fast-growing and can be a problem if you don't keep it trimmed back - it'll take over your tank and it can expel the contents of its cells turning your water green.

There are a lot that can cause problems, mostly hair and bubble algaes, but you can get fish and invertebrates that will help keep these under control. This is a good website for algae identification: http://saltcorner.com/sections/guest/algaepage/algaepage.htm Anything with a number by it is a "nuisance" algae that you don't want. The numbers correspond to numbers at the bottom of the page which list fish and inverts and the types of algea that each helps control. If there's no number, it's one you can keep in the tank.
