Would people care about Saul "Canelo" Alvarez if.......?

Q. he had brown hair, instead of red hair? Had brown, tan skin instead of white skin with freckles? If he looked Hispanic instead of Irish?

I'm not disputing his talent, but I don't think he would be as hyped by GBP if he looked like a regular Hispanic guy. Take for instance a guy like Alfredo Angulo, another Mexican boxer. He's mean looking and has the talent, but he doesn't generate nearly as much hype as Canelo, yet I think Angulo would kill Canelo. Same thing goes for Vanes Matirosyan. A California Armenian fighter with talent who nobody really knows about, but I think he would beat Canelo as well.

What do you guys think?

I will have to agree with your assessment. when i googled him recently, one article started with the following line..."Sporting baby-faced looks with red hair and freckles"...so yeah, it appears GBP is milking his looks for all they are worth. I was watching one of his fights and i lost count of how many times his red hair and good looks were mentioned. Nothing wrong with that, i suppose, as long as you have the performances to back it up, but no question in my mind if he had more "typical" hispanic looks he would not be hyped as much. perhaps "the cinnamon-colored one" had better be careful and not read his own press, or go hollywood. boxing is a tough sport, and if there is a perception he's mostly about marketing, he will give opponents extra motivation to beat him.
