I know this type of question gets asked all the time, but I was a little too lazy to do research so I'm just going to ask on here instead. I recently dyed my hair a really dark beautiful red and it faded really quickly, which I was afraid it was going to. The brand I used was revlon, I don't remember what shade it was and I didn't save the box this time.
I'm just wondering if people have had success with a red box dye that didn't fade too quickly or if you would recommend getting it done professionally and whether that makes a difference.
Thanks!
I do already use a color care shampoo/condition, it's Herbal Essences Color Me Happy.
It's not specifically for red hair, so maybe I'll try that but in the past it's been great for keeping my color from fading.

Professional red will be vivid longer then box dye. Either way it would be helpful to get color care shampoo and conditioner that won't strip away the color. Most drug store and professional brands carry color care products. Also try shampoo that is made for red hair. It has pigments of red in the shampoo to help brighten and maintain your color :)

I want a bright red hair color?
Rachel
About 6 weeks ago I had my hair dyed dark brown with red tints. I had the bottom half of my hair (aka an undercolor) dyed medium red. As you can imagine if you've dealt with red dye, the red is very dull and almost orange. The darker brown with red tint has faded quite a bit. My roots have grown in a little over 1/4 of an inch.
I want to dye my hair a bright red all over. I have chosen the products I want to use on my hair. I will be mixing a 30 volume developer in with a red creme. I was thinking of just using a red manic panic on the bottom half of my hair, while using the other products on the top half.
Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I know getting it done professionally would be the best option, but I'd rather do this myself as it will have an up-keep I would rather maintain myself. Thank you.

One of my fave YouTubers, Sarah, aka 'All Dolled Up', was a bright, vivid redhead for 4 years. Highly recommend her video tutorials (many re: maintaining the perfect bright red colour). Her #1 preference for hair colour is Special Effects-- all vegetable, densely pigmented dye(s) that last the longest and is the brightest red colour. The key to awesome bright red hair is to never just use one colour. Use a combo of two or three and add lowlights and highlights to spruce it up.
A combination of Special Effects 2 parts Nuclear Red and 1 part Cherry Bomb is the perfect, bright red combination. Your Manic Panic selection(s) will be awesome, too. The secret to really deep, non-fading, bright & pure red colour is to sleep with the dye on the hair and rinse the following a.m. Apply the dye, wrap with cling wrap and leave it on all night. Don't condition the hair first.. only shampoo. Adding about 1/8 ounce of hair colour to shampoo, conditioner, and leave-in conditioner will help to maintain colour.
Revlon Nutricolour styling and protective cream to maintain red hair is the BEST:

Manic Panic Vampire Red, Vampire's Kiss, Pillbox Red and Infra-Red are all great colours (very deep and rich..like Red Velvet cake)

Your plan bright red hair colour plan sounds good. It also sounds as if you already have everything under control. Sleeping in the dye with cling-wrap, and including a little of the hair colour in your shampoo, conditioner and leave-in conditioner will help maintain your colour.
I added a bunch of links for 'All Dolled Up' but she has so many vids that it was difficult to include just a handful. Hopefully these will help:
